Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Bit of an odd question but hear me out. Im sure there must have been some secretly gay boxers but has there been any openly gay?
I was recently reading a book called 'Looking for a fight' by David Matthews (excellent book I highly recommend it). Its a first person account that follows David Matthews himself (he is a journalist by trade) and he decides to become a professional boxer to find out from the inside about the business, with no prior boxing/sporting experience at the age of 31. He trains at the gym where Clinton Woods trains and Woods was saying that if there were a gay boxer he'd have a massive huge following and loads of fans due to the gay community. Got me wondering, has there ever been a gay boxer?
Re: Has there ever been an openly gay boxer?
Floyd Mayweather jr should come out of the closet soon
Emile Griffith - Boxer
this guy was openly bisexual. He fought guys like Carlos Monzon and Luis Manuel Rodriguez

That's the right name but he wasn't "openly" anything. At least not during his fighting days He lived almost all his life in a sad denial.
Here's a pretty good short bio of Griffith and the issue http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...56/1/index.htm

Outside of Griffth, Haye and Mayweather, I can't think of any gay boxers. :lolhaha:

Chop Chop said he wore women's underwear for the comfort. He has 7 kids, so at the very least he pretends to be straight quite often. ;)

Good post by Maui, makes a change someone contributing something they actually know something about these days ;D
Griffith was thought to be gay for his whole career, did deny it continually (maybe even to himself) I belive that Benny Paret called him a 'maricon' (gay) during the build up to their fight in which Griffith effectively killed him.
He was killed when he was attacked after leaving a gay club, so he's the most likely candidate I can think of.
Statistically (if you assume a constant %) many boxers we know will have been gay ...... but I'm not sure, as a certain type of person tends to be attracted and suitable to be a fighter and it might be more possible that high testosterone , aggressive types become boxers. Still, I dont really know.
