I don't understand the Cortez hate.
Dont get me wrong I understand the mans reputation and the fact that he's on average a terrible ref, but I'm not exactly certain about what the issue was tonight. From what I've pieced together, Ortiz head butts Mayweather and then he deducted a point and told them to resume fighting. They hugged and Mayweather stuck him and then Ortiz looked at Cortez and Mayweather knocked him out. Since it was a tie up or anything why should Cortez have stopped the fight after the first punch?
I could be wrong but from my understanding he shouldnt have. The blame lays on the shoulders of Ortiz alone. Was it kind of classless? Yes but nothing illegal and certainly not the refs fault. But please someone correct me if I'm missing something here.

Firstly, welcome ;)
Secondly, no your not mising much. Except that it wasn't the first headbutt of the fight and that there are a lot of people here, who hate Floyd and Joe.
Re: I don't understand the Cortez hate.
He took the point and i was fine with that, It was a blatant headbutt. What i had a problem with, was if he called for them to resume action, why the hell was Joe Cortez still looking at the ringside judges?? If they are fighting, all his attention should be on the fighers, and that's what i think confused Ortiz.

Exactly. "Im firm but, what  ? sorry i was looking over there".
Re: I don't understand the Cortez hate.
But the thing is...Cortez didnt miss anything illegal. I would get it if he missed something blatantly illegal such as a headbutt while looking at the timekeeper...but he didnt. He called for action to resume, looked away for a second and Ortiz was silly enough to keep his hands low after touching gloves. Ortiz had already apologised to mayweather once...even kissed him (id knock him out for that too ;D ), there was no need for the second apology.

I guess I need to rewatch. I never saw him call for action to resume.

Good point it was legal, darn good pay back for the intentional head butt too.

Ive rewatched it numerous times. Cortez chops his hand down between the fighters and verbally says to continue then signals the time keeper to restart the clock.
Re: I don't understand the Cortez hate.
But Cortez didnt need to be looking since nothing illegal happened. Cant blame Cortez coz Ortiz wanted to be overly friendly in a world title match. I think it was great that he apologised the first time...but the second time was overkill. If you watch in slow mo, mayweather touches his gloves and then puts his hands up, this should of been a sign for Ortiz to follow suit....he didnt, then the left hook was thrown followed by the right.

Cortez didn't need to be looking? Really? I'm fairly sure that a referee should be looking 100% of the time.

Well he is firm but fair .
How can he be the fairest if he doesnt glance at the mirror mirror on the wall camera occasionally?:)
Re: I don't understand the Cortez hate.
People hate MAyweather and thus do not judge him fairly he did no wrong Ortiz was in fact the scumbag here with repeated headbutts and then a leaping headbutt.
Re: I don't understand the Cortez hate.
Well hell of course it's Cortes's fault again. He should have stopped Ortiz from kissing and hugging Floyd a second time, after Cortes had said to fight on. He should have held up a banner that said "CONTINUE FIGHTING" instead of just saying it verbally. He should have leaped in the middle of Floyd's one-two and taken the punishment instead of the clueless Ortiz. The headbutt by Ortiz was Cortes's fault also. He should have seen the headbutts coming, and pushed Ortiz away or something. Hell.... in the dressing room, before the fight, Cortes should have said to Ortiz: "Hey listen... no blatant headbutts in there, or I'll have to deduct points away from you and maybe disqualify you. But if you DO headbutt... don't go kissing and hugging after I've told you to continue. You're liable to get clocked." That damn Cortes. He should be fired (like Merchant).

My point is that what mayweather did could of happened with or without cortez looking coz it was legal.
