Aside from his alcoholism, I've always felt that his trainers were in way over their heads as Pavlik's career progressed and started to go against more notable fighters.
Had he ditched his trainers for some more experienced guys, he may have been more successful down the line. Pavlik never really added anything new to his fight game. His poor footwork is a prime example.
