Weight-limit for heavyweights
I'm not buying "Fat" John's claim that he trained harder for this fight than for any other in his life. What was he doing, cycling through the McDonalds drive-thru?!
If you're Six foot and nineteen and a half stone you shouldn't be allowed to fight. I don't know how you could implement a weight-limit at heavyweight, as BMI obviously wouldn't work, perhaps percentage of body fat?
McDermott's idleness just ripped us all off.
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
Everybody is different, He has looked like that in fights before and shown good fitness, we didn't get a chance to see what his stamina was like. Can't expect every heavyweight to look like holyfield, klitschko etc
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
When I heard the result I was suprised, was he heavier than he was in other contests?
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
Yeah he was heavier than usual but not a massively like Danny Williams used to do fight to fight.
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
I hear what you are saying but despite how he looks he would beat 90% of the hws in britain
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
It might be that he trains hard and has the fitness but just doesn't eat right and puts fat on easier than the average person.
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
He trains hard but he eats harder, thats a fact.
But tbh he hurts no one but himself with the extra weight so whatever they wana do, let em do, it comes back to bite you in the end. He carries around about 50lbs of unneccessary blubber with him every fight, its a massive hindrance. Imagine carrying around a child in a backpack with you while boxing, thats basically what McDermott does every fight.
You absolutely dont need to be ripped with a sixpack to be a good heavyweight but anyone carrying anymore than about 15% bodyfat is simply creating a situation where they will be slower, less athletic and have less stamina. You are not giving yourself the best chance of winning. He would perform better with less fat, theres no two ways about it. Anyone saying people are different shapes/sizes etc doesnt have a clue, this is the toughest sport in the business and being fat hurts your chances.
Moving round a boxing ring for 12 rounds would you rather have 50lbs strapped to you or be free of that 50lbs strapped to you? Its clear under which circumstance you would perform better.

Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
I don't believe in making the fatties lose weight if they want to keep boxing. Why should we be controlling them? Eh. Let them do what they want.
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
Any of you lot remember a HW called Joe Hipp, he was fat but he could fight 10 round's at a good pace
so don't think just because he may be a fat bastard that they can't do 10 or 12 round's.
Boxing is not about the body beautiful, you don't need good muscle defamation to be a good fighter.!

You are missing the point a bit Dia Bando. Whether a fat dude can do the distance isnt the question. He WOULD be a better fighter with less weight to carry round, thats a fact. He would have EVEN MORE gas in the tank without the pointless blubber. It could make the difference in a close fight between winning and losing.
I dont know Joe Hipp but if hes overweight and could fight a good pace, if he was on weight he would have been able to fight at a VERY good pace.

Joe Hipp was a native American and not a bad fighter,he was over weight boy could he throe a lot of punches, my point don't judge a fighter by his look's but how he fight's.!
Re: Weight-limit for heavyweights
The problem is that Heavyweight is the only division in boxing where you can be morbidly obese; sure if you bix at the lower weights you could slack off and box at a weight above your ideal but not to the extent a heavyweight can.
