Sauna Suits
Hi folks,
Im just doing training myself in my garden shed and going to the gym, im not training for a fight or anything but i just love boxing training, its great therapy!
Anyway my question is this. I have a sauna suit which makes me obviously sweat a lot more while working out, my doctor says its no good for long term weight loss because its all dehydration and i will put all the weight back on as soon as I rehydrate, and that the only purpose of a sauna suit is to get to a specific weight for a weigh in, not for any long term weight losing benefits.
So my question is am I getting any long term weight loss benefits from the sauna suit?
Thanks

I have only been boxing for 3 months and have always trained in a sauna suit. I have lost 2 stone now and feel great. I was told that the sauna suit speeds up the metabolism and also you sweat out bad toxins.
If you stop wearing your suit you should keep the weight off if you keep training and eat healthier

Re: Sauna Suits
Cheers Barney ive lost 2 stone as well, since october, I was wearing the suit at first but stopped coz the fowk in the gym said it wasn't doing any good and that any weight i was losing would be replenished when i had a drink. But i reckon ill get back to wearing it now, certainly i was amazed at the amount of sweat it produced, i couldnt have been any wetter if i had just walked into the sea its great!
Thats great news about the metabolism and the toxins, I knew that boxing fowk would have more knowledge about this than a gp or normal gym fowk. cheers mate
Anyone got anymore thoughts?

Re: Sauna Suits
Yes, it just makes you sweat more... But little (if anything else).
Personally? I think that unless you have a weigh in they are a waste of time and pitentially dangerous.
I'd rather spend energy in my workout on throwing more, harder, faster punches than spend extra, uneeded energy on regulating temperature and sweating.
If you're fit, well hydrated and eating well you should get a good sweat on any way and your body mostly removes waste products best through circulation of the blood and lymphatic system. Both of these processes happen best by exercising... Sweat is secondary and your lymphatic system won't work as well dehydrated. So the toxin thing is a bit of a myth really.
Plus if you sweat in a t shirt a lot of it is wicked away... Sweat in a sauna suit and is goes no where till you take it off... So you'll reabsorb most of the toxins via osmosis anyway.
You're going to be losing a lot of pottasium and soduim in your sweat too. You're more likely to suffer muscle cramps and your recovery and contraction force and speed will suffer if you are low on these minerals. Not goid for your nerves.
Recently did a 24 hour boxing circuit for charity. I walked in 13 stone 2 and walked out 12 stone 4... Less than 24 hours later I wad 12 stone 12.
I spent the week before eating tonnes of salt/pottasium rich foods so I didnt make myself ill!

Re: Sauna Suits
Great post cheers. Thats given me a lot to think about. I do sweat a lot during training anyway and i see your point about the sweat not having anywhere to go, with the elasticated waist on the sweat suit one time i took it off it was like i had just poured a pint of water on the floor.
It did say when i got it there is a danger of fainting and i prefer to be able to just get on with my workout rather than have that worry at the back of my mind. Its a tough one alright, I dont like to waste £50 but I think your right that unless you have a weigh in its kinda pointless. I think the weight thats lost wearing just a t shirt is more likely to stay off.

Re: Sauna Suits
Just read the related posts at the bottom of the page, I think the suit will be going in the cupboard, general opinion doesnt seem to be good with some people saying theyre actually bad!
Didn't realise these previous posts were there so apologies to anyone who is sick of reading about sauna suits!!;D
