How easy is it to get a license in the states? What should I think about when I begin pursuing fights on a professional level?
Contact your state athletic commission; your state may even have a boxing commission. You should worry about your connections and if there is money behind you. If you have a trainer or matchmaker or financial backer with juice, maybe you'll get fights that will allow you to learn and grow as a fighter. If not, you'll get thrown to the wolves, on short notice, ill-prepared, etc...against guys that do have those things.
Its all about who you know... Its a very dirty business.. Best of luck!

See, I want to fight in another state. There's not a lot of gyms in my city, and I've never heard of any boxing events going down in my state. Is it plausible to be a professional fighter that is self-trained and just shows up for the fight?

I think there is a smaller, little known boxing gym around where I am. I think I'm going to pursue them and see what I can get from them. :D
I know this might be a silly comparison but hear me out...
Do you remember when WWF was still around (not WWE). During the weekly non-PPV events they would showcase a named fighter, but he would be matched up with some guy no one has ever heard of like Bob Smith that had no ring entrance and basic red bikini truncks. Then the big name would display all of his coolest moves just to eventually put the opponent away with a signature finish.
Pro boxing is like that. If you don't have a good manager, promoter and good contacts. You will basically become "Bob Smith"
When I said Pro Boxing is Dirty - What i meant was - It is a very heartless sport (business) and only cares about making money. If you can make someone money then you are important and will be taken care of. Otherwise you're just another Bob Smith.
