That was genuinly one of the stupidest stoppages I've ever seen in a fight. His eyes were clear, 4 seconds to go in a round and he stops what was shaping up to be one of the best fights of the year. I hope they order a rematch because things like this can ruin fighters. Utter bullshit.
the crolla - mathews fight is certainly a big domestic upset , i had the fight 47-47 at time of stoppage and the fight i think was stopped far too early as there were only seconds left in the round.
It was a poor stoppage. I think the earlier cut combined with the accumulation of damage got into the refs head for that one. It was strange timing cos Crolla was able to protect himself and was aware of what was going on. Wish the refs would butt the fuck out some times. Shame cos it may have been a classic. It wouldnt even have surprised me if Crolla went out and won in the next round, it was that kind of fight. On the 6 rounds seen, you have to say Derry deserved it though for sure.
I had it 47-47 after 5, but obviously Derry would have won the 6th had it ended.
Mathews dug in he was on top Crolla had a very bad cut, he had been on the floor the ref did not no there was 4 seconds left in the round. Crolla is a domestic level fighter at best I may be harsh but
that's his level. I don't go for all the hype my self Crolla he been over hyped a nice guy yes but no
World Champion in the waiting far from it. I may be hard to please but I don't kid myself Mathews
is shot, and Crolla has found his level.
Really wanted to watch this last night, but had to go to a mates 21st party, if anybody has a link please post it, I heard it was a good fight.

Good post. Disagree with the thread title. I'm an American with no bias toward either fighter. Yes, it was a premature stoppage, but it wasn't as if the referee had no reason to make the call. Crolla was getting tagged a lot and he had been badly affected by Derry's punches on many occasions. At the time of the stoppage, I didn't see Ricky Hatton complaining much, which may be indicative of something, right? One more thing, 99% of the time, this happens the other way around. For example, the Nicklow-Taylor fight in recent memory etc., where the referee stops the fight early and it provides an advantage to the house fighter. If anyone benefited here, it was the underdog in Matthews. More reason to believe the referee saw something up close that gave him good reason to stop the fight.Quote:
