A request from NBC to increase the time in between Rounds - 67 Seconds???
67 seconds between rounds?
Jonathan Miller, head of NBC Sports, has asked the Association of Boxing Commissions to increase the time between rounds an additional seven seconds to allow a full minute for commercials and still have a few seconds to replay highlights of the previous round.
Miller wrote:
“NBC has a major concern with the rigid timing between rounds set forth by the Boxing Commissions in each state. We feel strongly this mandate negatively impacts the quality of television production. The Fight Night Series will simply not survive without advertising support and allowing us to be storytellers. We must run two, thirty second commercial units between each round. The inability to come back from a one minute commercial break without any additional time to show highlight(s) from the previous round and set up the next round is a disservice to the boxing viewer and most importantly the athletes who are giving their all in the ring.
“For this reason, the NBC Sports Group is officially requesting an increase from sixty seconds between each round to sixty seven seconds to allow us to better serve our audience and improve the quality of our shows. This change will make the sport more broadcast friendly and substantially increase a boxer’s ability to make a living on a platform other than the pay channels of HBO, Showtime & PPV. The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL all have adapted to this broadcast friendly model and with their network partners customized mutually beneficial television timings. This timing change will not negatively impact the integrity of competition but only enhance the content in building stars and elevating the great sport of boxing.
“We ask that you give this timing request every possible consideration.”
I understand what they are trying to do, but do not agree whatsoever!
Thoughts?

I can wait an extra seven seconds...if it means more quality boxing on tv.

Why can't the network limit commercials to 20 or 25 seconds, so they can still run two between each round... and also show the replays? The time between rounds has remained unchanged as long as I can remember..... and to change this due to TV commercial considerations is not fair to the sport. I think they're looking in the wrong direction.

This is the direction i was thinking... Why adjust the sport, how adjusting the commercials to fit more in... I see condensed versions of commercials all the time.

Amir Khan has endorsed this proposal and would have liked Saturdays fight to have had 24hrs between rounds for commercials.

That was just plain cold-blooded, bro.

That's just goofy. If anything when boxing was actually prominent on NBC ABC etc it always seemed to be the commercial cutting in before rounds were over or hearing a round begin while a ad for Sunny Delight was still on. They always got there full ad on large part. Then again if they had more time I would have actually seen Carbajal ko Kittakasem LIVE, and not on replay after commercial :p
wonder how the ratings are doing for the cards ?

It was lol but a good point. Just think about what an extra 7 seconds in that corner might have done for Khan on Saturday?
It might mean more money for boxing (doubt it ends up in the right hands anyway) but the sport is 60 seconds in between rounds..It should stay that way. It's something that could potentially make a difference to the outcome of fights
Re: A request from NBC to increase the time in between Rounds - 67 Seconds???
They should do it. Seven seconds is nothing to get boxing back on networkk TV in America again. I don't even know why they're making any kind of fuss over it.

Leave it alone. What next 10 round title fights because 12 might interfere with some stupid tv show?

I think the majority agrees with us, judging from the posts so far. TV wanting to change boxing's rules to suit itself is a bit like the tail wagging the dog. I say let TV adapt to boxing's rules. Better to change the length of commercials than mess with the time between rounds.
