Calvin brock slightly underrated
A 2x golden gloves winner, who also won the U.S. amateur championship at 201lbs. He is also a former olympian. Finished with a pro career record of 31-2. I was a big fan of brock back in the day, a good boxer (not great or anything) but a good all round fighter, was undefeated before meeting wlad for the IBF & IBO belts. One of the best american fighter's of the early to mid 00's along with brewster & byrd imo. Brock is one of those heavyweights who could have benefitted immensely from the absence of the name 'klitscko' in the division, he would have picked up a belt no doubt!
Brock nearly took zuri lawrences head off in a KO of the year fight, he got off the floor to outbox jameel mcline. Mcline had just defeated shannon briggs, michael grant in one round and big lance whitaker (who has a stoppage win over big punching oleg maskaev!) Mcline beat a host of other contenders like charles shufford and cedric boswell too and was ranked in ring mags #10 for 3 yrs. Chris byrd could only manage a close (but fair) SD against mcline.
He also outpointed the undefeated Timur Ibragimov. Brock was pretty much done though when eddie chambers won a SD over him in 07, he was out of shape (something like 20lbs heavier than when he fought ibragimov a year earlier) and suffering from a career ending eye injury. Brock was a very good fighter when in form. Would you agree?

He was OK. He fell way short of Wlad but instead of learning from that and trying to become better because of it, it seemed to end him for me. I didn't know the eye injury had ended his career though, I just assumed he'd given up.

Calvin Brock was good, I always liked the guy. Well educated, hard worker, from North Carolina ;D
He had a difficult style much the way Eddie Chambers has a difficult style. He had good defense, a solid chin, underrated power, and that KO of Zuri Lawrence was BRUTAL! He gave Wlad a hard fight and he came in the ring trying to win, it's a shame about the eye injury but luckily he had his education to fall back on and he seems to be doing well with that because he's not made any comeback attempts.

He placed value on education but boxing was his passion and main emphasis...the degree in finance was a fall back had his career not panned out! He is actually now a commercial real estate agent...i love that!
He was fighting from the age of 9 years old! Had a great amateur career and a great pro career. Brock is one of many american fighters that have flown under the radar in recent years (steve USS cunningham being another) these guys are talented fighters yet they barely get acknowledged just because they don't have a big mouth and shun acting like an idiot! Criminal.

These guys are doing a smart thing having an education to fall back on. It should be praised and fighters should be doing it a lot more than they currently are! Sensible.

He beat mcline easier than chris byrd, sam peter, shannon briggs or michael grant did! And he did give us KO of the year 2006! He also handed clifford Etienne his arse too! Brock was a very good fighter.
Facts about etienne:
-Did anyone know etienne is currently serving a 150 year prison sentence without possibility of parole? Fooking hell...lol
-Etienne was named 2000's "Most Exciting Fighter to Watch" by The Ring Magazine, largely the result of his unanimous decision over then-undefeated Lawrence Clay Bey.
-He also beat Lamon Brewster, the future WBO heavyweight champion, on points after ten rounds
-Etienne took up boxing while serving a 40 year prison sentence for armed robbery and won the state prison boxing championship.

i don't think this is a dig at all. his alias on boxrec is "the boxing banker"-- not the banking boxer!
with his outlook on being a well rounded person and stressing the importance of having a strong education and not having boxing being his sole defining interest (as mentioned in the interview you provided a link for); i would think he'd appreciate people recognizing that he was also a banker.

I don't think he's underated really, it's just he was what he was. Descent enough with good hands and pop, a little slow of foot, a bit fleashy with a smart mind and educated for life after boxing and a hell of a tap dancer from what I saw. He had some wins though Mccline was known to freeze up at high altitude on occasion. Etienne was a flavor of the month with a chin with the predictability of a tower of Jenga pieces and was yrs removed from Oquendo dropping him 101 times with the same punch. Shame the eye issue took Brock out but at least he had a fallback. Smart one there.
