I have always thought it was in the late 50s or early 60s, but can't confirm it. I'm sure a Master will know. The reason for the change was to allow the ref to concentrate on rule enforcement and fighter safety.

I don't think it was that far back. I have been following boxing since 1981 with the Holmes-Snipes fight and I remember Ring magazine exstensive fight reviews, no matter how small the town or venue, and remember some states still had two judges and a ref scoring.Quote:
