Lalonde/Leonard vs Dawson/Ward
How is it that Leonard was able to collect 175 tin when the title holder had to make 168? Super middleweight was a brand new division and Leonard was boxing's tit. The WBC had just announced the division and Donny was the champ at 175. A fight was offered to Lalonde for a Leonard comeback with the stipulation that he make 168. He accepted and the Wbc sanctioning body for both titles looked the other way.
Had Dawson convinced Ward to 170 then it could have been arranged I am sure that both titles would be on the line. Forcing Dawson to 168 eliminates 175. The Wba may have pulled out also and the winner would have been put in the same position as Martinez was.

Does a fighter have to make a minimum weight for any division though? If they dont then Dawsons light heavy title could be on the line?
I think anyone of anyweight can challenge for the heavy title.

I cant seem to find a definitive rule. I am pretty sure you have to weigh a pound over you normal weigh in max to challenge a division higher. I'm quite sure a lightweight cant challenge a heavyweight and would have to make 141 to fight at welter. I know safety cut offs exist but cant find them.
In the original 8 days it sure didn't seem to matter.
Re: Lalonde/Leonard vs Dawson/Ward
Leonard made his own rules, back in the day he could walk on water,
and the governing bodies bowed down to him.

Hmmmm, im sure when Jones fought Ruiz, that it was mentioned somewhere that he could fight him at whatever weight he wanted. If thatsthe case then Dawson could be defending his light heavyweight title against Ward and also be challenging for Wards super middle title. Im sure there is no minimum weight rule.

I do not recall that and its interesting that not long after that fight, they moved the cruiser limit to 200.
Jones was able to fight Ruiz because he weighed in over 190. I remember he weighed in again the night of the fight in his light blue valuer track suit and 5 pound rolex and was 198. He was packing a lot of water, I bet he weighed 175 after the fight lol.
I just don't see the Orgs allowing say a feather weight at the weigh in to fight even a lightweight at the weigh. Its not bareknuckle and its not a tough guy contest. I mean why have 17 divisions. If they allowed these kinds of things to happen they would be charged with murder.
And whatever happened to the Gatti rule. Any time I think of the Gomache fight I cringe.

True it was disgraceful how he could manipulate them. He made Donny strip to the super middle weight and then beat his ass. Forget about safety to Donny.

Funny thing is after the fight Lalonde said he had never felt better and that he had no issues making weight and actually weighed in under. In addition he offered up his 175 crown to ensure he got the fight. For 6 million he most likely would have removed a limb.
What I would like to know is how he was able to that w/o a catch weight? Then it dawned on me that the Org sanctioning the fight was the WBC and they were introducing a new division.
Re: Lalonde/Leonard vs Dawson/Ward
Didn't Hearns fight for another title at a different eight at the same time?
Re: Lalonde/Leonard vs Dawson/Ward
I don't think Hearns did.
