Would going to a boxing gym only once or twice a week be any good?
I've found that there is a boxing gym about 40 miles away from where I live, but because I work I would only be able to go to it on Fridays or Saturdays (when i'm off). The rest of the time I would have to work out by myself. But would it help to learn from a trainer once a week, then practice what I've been taught until next time?
As I've stated before, I just want to get into boxing for recreation and excercise (and self-defense), I'm not in it to compete (unless I decide I really enjoy it).

For exercise, health and fitness, one or two booxing sessions would make a nice change from the regular gym.
However, its all about consistency; if you don't exercise daily you won't reap the rewards.

What I would do is work hard on the day I went to the boxing gym, then I would practice what I've learned throughout the week as best I can; "homework" if you will. (I can still work out by myself during the week when i'm off work, I just can't drive all the way to the boxing gym because it's so far away).

Sounds good to me; but is you're objective to develop boxing for sporting purposes or just to get healthy?

Pretty much for health and self-defense purposes (should the situation ever arise).

Think of it like playing a musical instrument, the more you practice the better you get.
You can do any training in the world, but it will not beat actually going to a gym, and having one-on-one coaching.
Twice a week would be fine, throw in some running, skipping and shadow boxing and footwork, footwork, footwork :)
Once a week you will still make plenty of progress.
If you went zero times a week how much better will you get, how much stronger, fitter, healthier.

Cool; well if I could offer some advice then, I'd use the boxing sessions for as much technique as possible and then break up the rest of the week between conditioning or strength exercises.
A lot of the time thats what I do. I use the boxing gym specifically to develop my boxing and then for fitness/strength (and vanity;D ) I have an entirely different program of training.
