That is fascinating. McClennan was a decent fighter, but it is seeing the craft of prime Toney that excites me. What a talent, just beautiful to watch. So fluid, so knowing. Defense to attack in the blink of an eye. Toney was a natural.
Toney's defense looked so effortless in this sparring session. Just a natural.
In many yes we will look back and talk about James Toney , like we talk about Archie Moore and all those wonderful fighters who made boxing look easy.
To go from MW to HW and be competitive is just amazing.
Toney was slick.
Amazing to think that jones outboxed a prime toney 3-4 years later.
All three are amazing fighters.
I would have love to have seen mcclellan beat roy jones in the amateurs..anyone got that footage?
Toney is my favourite fighter, and I enjoyed that footage.
Toney was 21 years old and 17-0, McClellan was 22 and had had 16 pro fights. Evenly matched on paper, but Toney hands him a masterclass in boxing there. Surprising to see a stalker like McClellan fighting on the back foot at the end.
With reference to Jones Jr-Toney, that was a Leonard-esque class in stacking the deck in your favour.
That was quality, Toney was brilliant and Gerald did well as well.
At this point in time James Toney had just 8 (not 17) fights behind him, McClennan 16.
Wow thank you awesome video. Is Toney the one in the white shirt? If so it looks to me like he starts to struggle with fitness eventually as his left drops quite a bit after a while, and while he is clearly skillful enough to compensate it is quite stark compared with the first couple of minutes.
Ult cringe :/
They were born with a gift and happily showed us there gift....thats why boxing is a fine art to appreciate and saviour (:
job biscuit (the sweet science)!!!
