How do I throw a jab that has a slight hooking motion to it textbook style?
Ok so you have the bog standard Jab
Then you have a jab that dosnt come perfectly straight it has a slight arc to it, its a great set up shot apparently, and has a nice angle to get past their guard, without leaving you too open for a straight right. (This is what I want to know how to throw!!??)
Then you have a left hook thrown straight from your stance arm bent at 90 degrees.
Then you have a left hook thrown straight from your stance but with the arm almost straight out sometimes refered to as an educated swing or long range left hook. (How do you throw this properly?)
Also Im getting confused between how to throw a jab with a slight hooking arc and how to throw an actual long range hook or "educated swing" !?
How do you throw each of these?
Many thanks!

Well, just to address the slightly hooking jab. Firstly, the jab is by far the most varied of any punch by function, intent, and delivery. Sometimes a range finder, a range controller, a set up punch, a means of simply breaking down an opponent over time...so so many things. What you are describing sounds a bit like an overhand right, except maybe tighter. Just off the cuff here, I would guess it would involve starting a bit outside your target, then turning the hips in a lot more...so kind of between a left hook and standard jab somewhere.

In his book Boxing, the best instructional book ever written on the subject, Edwin L Haislet says that the 'swing' has no place in the arsenal of a skillful boxer. I subscribe to that belief as well. There is no 'textbook' way to throw a "hooking jab" because you don't...You create those angles that enable you to get around an opponent's defense with feints and by moving your feet, not by throwing a corkscrewing, knuckleball jab.

I downloaded this very good book, on your recommendation in a previous thread.
I never got to thank you.
Good read, thanks.
