Is counter punching/interception the highest level of boxing?

Or does it depend on the fighter and his genetics?

Why is counter striking so effective?


I often look for ways to hit them in a way that I cant be counter struck, for example I will fient or x2 up my jab get in and out at angles, do exagerated slips while punching in unorthdox ways (not as terrible as it sounds), is this way of attacking inferior to counter striking if so why?

PS If greynotsoold answers I just rewatched that Gabriel counter punching southpaw and I now "get" it, he is AMAZING! So im gonna slip the jab to land the lead hook/lead uppercut as a counter and only ever attack with straight punches but preferably I counter using those too.

Counter punching is so effective because they are committed with no escape.
The best type is used when their own arm or shoulder is the cover that your shot comes out from behind to catch them with the unseen punch.

I think the highest level of boxing or anything, is becoming nothing, no thoughts just totally in the zone action and reaction,its like you are the witness and the supplier of the moves but its coming from much deeper than any thoughts. Thought then gets in the way of instinct and will slow you down.

I think slipping and counter punching is definitely better because if you just use a high guard against punches your not in a good position to throw a punch yourself so by slipping you not only avoid getting hit but are in a position to hit him yourself. Make em miss then make em pay!

When you hit a guy with a clean counter, you are using his momentum against him, and he is in no position to deflect, roll with or otherwise avoid the punch. And it is all counter punching, even your attacks, because they draw a response and you'll land your best shots as counters to those.
I think the highest level of boxing is when you are not merely reactively countering, waiting to see what he throws and then reacting to it. It is when you know what he is going to throw before he does, because you are making him throw that particular punch. Either by feinting, or by 'giving' him an opening to punch at. Watch this fight:

Last, when you are practicing your slips and counters, don't get in a hurry to counter with a bunch of punches. Get the slip and that first punch down tight because that first one will likely be the most damaging blow; learn to get that one home and then build on it. Don't neglect the first one by getting in a rush to let your hands go. One well timed and well placed punch will accomplish more than a flurry that is off beat.

The strongest offensive fighter will win, and many people will tell you offense is the most best form of defense.

Making this simple, you want to be a good boxer you need to know how to punch.

Becoming a great boxer you know how to counter the punch, but your thinking does not change, your only thought should be to attack.]

Every block, every parry should leave you the opportunity to attack.

By thinking as a defensive fighter you do yourself a great disservice.

I agree but first and foremost your main aim should be attack.

What I feel has been asked, comes across as counter punching is more important than attack.

Any one who practices this which be at a sever disadvantage.

Like everyone has mentioned, attacking should be your main focus, which really entices your opponent to open up SO you can counterpunch.

There's so many advantages if you're a good counterpunching, but perhaps more than anything is the fact that you can effectively control your opponent. It makes him more reluctant to throw punches.

Mayweather is not the hardest hitter, but every single one of his opponents usual work rate drops because they know they could get tagged.

Whatever state of mind the boxer is in when he first starts boxing is most often what he or she builds their foundation upon. It's like the way you behave around a very good friend, most often you regress back to the way you were when you first met them. With boxers, there have traditionally been a cyclical love affair between boxers they've admired from years past. So someone loving Joe Frazier may want to emulate his tough, Philly style (no matter what the coach says). What it comes down to first and foremost is what style a boxer chooses to adopt, typically under the influence of their favorite boxer, but more favorable with what their coach suggests to them.

Personally, I feel to be a dominating fighter, you have to be willing and open to all aspects of boxing. Boxing has so many dimensions, that it perplexes me to hear a boxer commit to only one facet of it. Counter punching, feinting, and all the rest of these boxing tools should be in every boxer's tool box, it should NOT be a choice. I don't care how tough you think you are, no one is immune to the cutting waters of time. You'll slow down, you'll wear just like everyone else. What can you do to delay this in terms of boxing? You can fight intelligently and not get hit so much. Being an intelligent boxer is commonly associated with not having power. This is a common boxing fallacy, usually held in belief to those who merely watch boxing. The power comes two fold, a physical impact to the face or body, and a mental impact on your opponent.

The greatest asset for a boxer is arguably is attitude. Men have survived things that should have killed them 10 times over, but their will to live was so strong that miraculously, they lived. When you make your opponent miss(and ideally make them pay as well), you take away that mental edge that they brought with them into the ring. You take their focus away, and suddenly they're more focused on why they can't hit ya instead of figuring out HOW to hit ya. These are all just general statements, I can't tell you the mental fortitude of every single boxer in the ring, but generally these are the feelings that counter punching illicit.

It is only to a boxer's benefit that he or she learns to make hitting, how to hit and how NOT to get hit an intuitive part of their training.
