I was talking to a pro in the gym and was watching me spar and said you need more movement with your lead arm, more jabs,feints,measuring,distractions,etc etc......he said its ideal to be doing something with your lead arm thru out the whole fight. What it is depends on the situation but you never want that arm to be stationary.....I find it interesting and looks like it makes sense.
Came here to get more knowledge on it from other people and see what yous think? Anything to add?
Think about a traditional sword fighter,if that lead ceases to move or react he is finished. Similar actions need to occur with a lead arm.
In boxing you are not limited to a straight runway:
There are also moves where by you hold it out there for a second or use it under pressure and shift your body around it then go for the openings that creates.
When you shift your center line around your lead you just moved the playing field for both of you.
If you are jabbing or feinting every second, the feints become lose effect, the jabs lose power and become predictable you do not want to become predictable because you will make for a easy counter.
You do not need to be doing something every few seconds.
There is also drawing, which is lowering/dropping your hand, to invite opponent to hit you.
While very useful, is again something you do not want to be doing regularly as, the opponent will anticipate this and knock you on your ass.
Don't feel pressured to always be doing something with your left hand, becoming predictable is much worse than being inactive.
While you may see pro fighters do this in a single round they would not dream of doing it for every single round.
You want to be unpredictable, concentrating on moving your lead arm is distracting and the opposite of landing punches on your opponent.
True. passive/reactive /active. But not just hanging out there doing nothing all the time like in wait of their moves. And as Boyla says; not out there doing all sorts of shit just for doing shits sake.
You'll find the balance, each fight is different as is each fighter.

Yeah thats the other point, a lead will disrupt, deflect or stop certain shots even if its hanging out there and you turn your center line around it with footwork.Quote:

You don't always throw the jab from the same place, so you move it around. Drop it and bring it up from under, or get it outside his shoulder and out of his line of vision and maybe turn it into a hook. You always do something, but never do anything just to be doing something. If that makes sense.
You can do the same thing with your feet, if you are out of range. Move here and there, wave the left hand around, look busy. There's guys that have made careers stealing rounds looking busy like that.
