Olympic Gold medal and one of the greatest upsets in boxing history when Leon, in his 8th professional fight, decisioned the great Muhammad Ali to become the World's Heavyweight Champion. Those are amazing accomplishments.
Magazine covers, endorsements, millions of dollars to be made after the Ali win, but Leon threw the monkey-wrench into it...
Leon's manager, Butch Lewis, was negotiating lucrative endorsements for the new Heavyweight Champ, but Leon got caught with about 5 dollars worth of cocaine. No company's going to want a spokesman who's frontpage news on a cocaine charge, especially back then.
Overnight, the endorsements were gone.
Millions of dollars gone just because Leon couldn't stay away from the coke until the deals were signed at least and they had the money.
For $#!t's sake, put off the partying until the big money comes in at least, then go out and enjoy it!
It's like someone puts a wad of money in your open hand, and all you have to do is close your hand and it's yours. Leon caused the money to be taken away before he closed his hand on it. God knows how much Leon Spinks cost himself...and his family too. More legal troubles followed later. Leon was homeless for awhile; then a janitor for $5.15 cents per hour. Nothing wrong with being a janitor, but this guy was the World's Heavyweight Champ who beat Muhammad Ali !
Something like that football player, Michael Vick, p!$$ing away the American Dream because he liked watching dogs kill each other.
