If you could dictate rules for International Professional Boxing, what are the first things you would change? Please leave the bodies of Card Girls out of this hit list.

I would go back to same day weigh ins.

Limit weight divisions to 12.

Same day weigh-ins.
15 rd Title fights.
8 weight classes.
1 World Champ per class.
Marijuana would not be on the banned list.
Xylocaine injections in the hands would be on the Las Vegas banned list.
Judges couldn't be bought.
There'd be a union.
Larry Merchant would be on tv forever.
That scourge to Boxing jose sulaiman would be tortured to death on ppv.
There'd be yellow card system which they used to do in Pride. When a professional fighter was stalling and not fighting as he's paid to do, the ref would issue a yellow card which was an automatic deduction of 10% of his purse. Oh, those devils would start fightin' then.

I like everything you listed above, a while back I wrote a little wall of text saying that in my opinion if the judge is paid a capped portion (not %) of each boxers purse then the bias towards the house fighter would be minimized.

But I'd do Three things above all else.

• Stern review for controversial scoring and harsh punishments for incompetence.
• A social safety net for boxers to make sure they don't get stiffed by their managers and business associates, or that a once great champ isn't suddenly homeless.
• A far more rigorous health check up, specially after brutal fights, lest another Edwin Valero tragedy occurs.

I would think long and hard on this one. I liked them when they existed... but this should be exhaustively studied first.

Certification of boxing judges, and rigorous testing and continuous education, like any professional.

Agreed. There would probably be some sort of short term pain but I think it would equal out the playing field. My guess is that it would probably have an effect from say 122 to 175. There would be chaos from divisions like 140 more or less emptying but imo the long term gain would be worth it.

The weight shedding has probably contributed more to deaths in the ring then the total rounds. Imo the knee jerk reaction by the Wbc after Mancini/Kim was overkill. The statistics do not support 15 rounds as being the problem.

A complete refit of judging from the ground up. Qualified judges for title would have their names drawn out of a hat, literally. A comprehensive teaching program of what a 10 point must system is and how its applied. Sound booths if necessary and even suspended in order to eliminate the blind spots.

1 division 1 title

There are a few others but that is where I would start. Having said that I'm not sure how one could eliminate all the titles. The big 4 Orgs are firmly entrenched.

That scourge to boxing jose sulaiman said the drop to 12 rds instead of 15 was based on scientific evidence that more injuries took place in those last 3 rds and they wanted to prevent that, but the real reason they did it is because the television stations that put up all the money wanted to fit a scheduled show into hour-by-hour time slots, and avoid dead air.
12 rds is 47 minutes start to finish including rest periods, plus there's time for introductions.
15 rds is 59 minutes including rest periods, but the intros take you over the allotted time.
The preliminaries fill the 1st hour.

15 rds leveled the playing field for pressure fighters: guys that were tough, rugged, with endurance, but didn't have all the genetic gifts of speed, coordination, reflexes that many top fighters have like a prime Roy Jones for example. Nowadays pressure fighters like Glen Johnson or Andrade get outpointed for the first 8 or 9 rds, but they're working the body throughout doing some damage each rd. By rd 12, they're in total control, and finally have the guy exactly where they want him, and boom, the fight's over! They run out of time. Lost the battle, but won the war. Fighters used to say 15 rds separates the men from the boys.

So many classic fights became classics in the 13th rd.

12 Divisions? Keep Jr Flyweight and Jr Lightweight. Eliminate all other Jrs or Supers. Everything else remains the same.
I could live with 11 Divisions by dropping Jr Lightweight as that would keep the weight progression consistent but there is so much activity between 130, 135 and 140.
This is all a fantasy wish list. I don't even like to think about what it would actually take to make some of these ideas happen. There would be bloodshed. LOL

Make Unification fights mandatory. If you are gonna stay at one weight you don't get countless voluntaries you have to clear out the division or lose your belt and drop down the rankings.

Make rankings relevant.
