A good friend of mine sparred hundreds of rounds with him in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Always spoke very highly of him, said that he was not only a great fighter, but a gentleman as well.
Often when someone dies, although not direct criticism, the measure of the person can be answered by those who choose not to speak about them. For what it is worth (an awful lot, I think), seemingly anyone who knew or was connected to Griffith, has come out basically with your sentiments...
