#1 Trainer, Ignacio Beristain says MARES-GONZALEZ won't go past 6rd
Beristain has trained Mares long time ago so he should be very familiar with his style. I dont know how many of you remember this but Mares was a totally different fighter back when he was under the guidance of Nacho. He was so composed, patient , always picking his shots and looking for counters.. It was only after he left Nacho that he turned so wild..
Is Nacho bitter than Mares left him or does he really believe that Gonzalez knocks him out ?
Me personally, I might be a little bias because Jhonny is one of my favorites, but, stylewise, I really think he has more than a good chance to beat Mares..
Thoughts?

If beristain trains you, you will be a thoughtful fighter. Well conditioned, too. You'd have to be either (a) stupid or (b) under pressure by 'the powers that be" to be more exciting to leave him.
What does jhonny gonzalez have left? He's been around a while and in a lot of wars.

Jhonny has always been somewhat of a hot and cold fighter. Just when you think he's done, he would comeback and surprise us all..
After he lost to Nishioka in 09, he went on an undefeated run for 12 straight fights with big names including Hasegawa and the underrated Elio Rojas..
So he lost to Deleon but it's not as if he took a beating so I dont get why people think he's washed up. And plus, Deleon beat Broner in many people's eyes so there's no shame in losing to him really.. And styles make fights..
Mares may have grown into a bonafide fighter today but back around 05-06, Jhonny used to hire him as a sparring partner and got the better of him everytime from what i know..
Jhonny has fought bigger opponents with bigger punches and skills.. I dont think Mares brings so much to the table that Johnny has never seen before..
Jhonny has the height reach advantage, dude has one punch KO power in both hands and his boxing skills are exceptional so there isn't a reason why he couldnt win.
But punch resistance is his achilles heel so Nacho is right, Jhonny's best chance is to attack and get Mares out early...
Go Jhonny!!!!

I think Nacho is right. I don't think it goes 6. I think Gonzalez has a better chance of stopping Mares than De Leon did. And it can happen if Mares trades with him. His power has always been sick. Problem for Gonzalez is his chin starts breaking during the ring walk. It's that bad. Him getting stopped in 1 wouldn't be a shocker.
