Cotto to go for his legacy and face Martinez at 160?
Arum: Cotto Will Earn More From Martinez Than Canelo - Boxing News
This is a fight that looks like it could be happening. Who does Canelo face? I think he should fight Kirkland or Thurman, would be good to see him vs them two. But I'm sure Lara will have a say in something.

Apparently this is pretty close to being set, I don't know about Cotto at 160 though. Pretty much all depends on what Martinez has left to me, this would have almost been a mismatch a few years ago.

IF the martinez that beat the retarded mexican shows up he wins. If his skills have diminished, then it will be pretty close. interesting
Re: Cotto to go for his legacy and face Martinez at 160?
This is why Cotto is respected and bankable win or lose, he's willing to fight the best opponents available to him, and his fights are exciting.
He'd be long odds to beat Sergio Da Sex Martinez, but Martinez will be 39 years old in a couple of months with several recent injuries.
2 years ago, it would've been a mismatch. Right now, it's a good match.
That'd be an exciting fight. Hopefully it happens.

@bradlee180 - you are right on point, my friend. Two years ago, I would have picked Martinez to KO Cotto, now I'm not so sure. Cotto looked devastating in his last fight and Martinez disappointed. Martinez will have been out for 14 months at the time of this fight if it happens in June, and will have undergone multiple surgeries. On the other hand, this will be the first time in a long time that Martinez is in there with a legitimate junior middleweight (although I think COtto was most effective at 140-147). He finally won't be the smaller man. Can Cotto's power translate to 160? Can he take a punch from Martinez at 160 that he doesn't see? If Martinez's legs are still there, can he fight Martinez? Can Roach configure a game plan to beat Martinez in his second bite at the apple? Will Martinez go back to Sarmiento?
Cotto gets so much props for taking this fight, I can't even tell you. If he signs up for it, win or lose, he's in the HOF. I know most people would put him there already, but I was sort of on the fence. Now there will be no debate.
Re: Cotto to go for his legacy and face Martinez at 160?
Martinez is kind of a smaller middleweight so I think it's a good quality matchup, but I fear for whoever wins because GGG and/or Quillen is on the horizon for the winner and those guys are dangerous.
I think Martinez-Cotto will be a close solid action packed fight.
As for Canelo: Lara, Kirkland, Thurman...solid fights
Re: Cotto to go for his legacy and face Martinez at 160?
I do hope this fight takes place. For both of them its a defining fight.

A few years back, Cotto would have gotten killed. It would have been a suicide mission.
Now though, I don't know. Like you said, depends how much Martinez has left in the tank.
This might be a good time to get Martinez.
Re: Cotto to go for his legacy and face Martinez at 160?
Multiple knee surgery combined with inactivity... cotto is picking the right opponent at the right time. Its a down low cherrypicking.

Couldn't agree with you more... and most knowledgeable, impartial boxing fans agree with you also. Cotto's going for his 4th title in his 4th weight division. Yes... he's small for 160... but he's a proven champion and future HOF'er. What better way to seal your legacy than to go up against another alltime great, in the classy Sergio Martinez? Even beyond the ring matchup, these are two guys who've done their countries proud. Like you, I'm excited about the prospect of this fight happening.

A tad myopic dont you think? I mean Cotto is almost as worn out as he is and is not 175 at fight time. I guess Leonard waited Hagler out and Armstrong tried to time out Garcia as did Robinson Lamotta? Pugilistic Darwinism.
