Gary Russell finally stepping up??
I was big on Gary Russell...like 3 years ago but his handlers have really ruined my taste for wanting to see him succeed. Now he's finally "stepping up" I see this move by Russell's team as bit underhanded and self serving, whats new.
Anyway I hope it gets made and Lomanchenko starches Russell ala Maidana VS Broner, its time to end the Haymon gusatpo crap.

Maybe his handlers have decided his hands just aren't going to hold up so they might as well make a move now.
Jhonny declined because russell hadnt earned the right to face him.. regardless russell is a high risk low reward and the champ shouldnt have to put up with that.
Re: Gary Russell finally stepping up??
He needs to because all he is doing now is spinning his tires blowing out flyweights last out. Gbp is pushing him like a 5 am Shredded Wheat induced bathroom break but if his hands cannot hold up against guys he barley has to touch, they wont get any better levels up. Time to take off the training wheels and send him around the block.

Bullshit, thats exactly what champs should be doing. Taking high risk fights. Joke that champs can hand pick their opponents
Re: Gary Russell finally stepping up??
I care less and less about whether fighters have "earned" anything on paper these days, we just need to see good fights getting made more frequently. There are SO many great matchups that don't even get discussed because of either promotion, or this idea that you've got to go through a murderers row to fight someone with a belt, regardless of how they got it to begin with. Has Lomachenko earned a title shot? Of course not, but he looks good enough to beat Salido and if he does that's great for boxing, we might have a future great. Say Gonzales for whatever reason hadn't picked up a title last year. His fighting Gary Russell would be a terrific crossroads encounter and probably produce a very good fight.
Young, super talented guys should be getting rushed into the big picture, as there is very little new blood in boxing. It's all well and good if a fighter and his handlers want him to move slowly, but when that's not the case and we closet fans still insist on it, while chastising others for doing exactly that, it's pretty comical.

If this is true then it's bullshit, as he's Jhonny is likely fighting Clive Atwell next. What has he done that makes him more deserving than Russell?

hahaha yet when Cotto went ahead and took on Trout he was "cherry picking and it backfired", sorry if you don't take on those type of opponents it shows you have no real confidence or balls to back it up

Who said trout was a cherrypick?
Homey, jhonny's resume speaks for itself. He's never ducked anybody..
His career has been a rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs so now that he's in a position to call some shots, dude is trying to get paid without taking unecessary risks such as a fight with russell..
Fuck that punkass t rex arm russell who has fought nothing but washed up mexicans and baggage handlers.. why should he get a titleshot when there are so many deserving fighters?
