Happy to see this. He seems honest and serious about wanting the fight, lets hope it happens.
Sounds like a call out to me, great to hear him being level headed and makes a good point. First things first, don't sleep on Cotto who knows its his final hoorah.
It makes sense and probably the biggest money, so hope he beats Cotto and looks good doing it.
Good way to build interest in the Cotto PPV.
I know that's pessimistic but it's been such a long wait for anything to happen in the MW division I can't help but expect Sergio to suffer an "injury" in the Cotto fight. With that "injury" convincing him it's time to hang them up.
It's not an indictment on Sergio or his career. I just have this gut feeling he's only still around for this Cotto payday. I hope I'm way off and Sergio shows himself to still be willing to take on all comers.
I wouldn't put it passed him to actually suffer an injury. He came out of his last two fights pretty busted up. On the other hand, this is the first opponent that he will be facing that isn't bigger than he is. But, if he doesn't suffer an injury, I don't doubt his willingness to step in the ring with GGG. Martinez versus GGG would be the biggest event at middleweight since Martinez took the title. It would be a highly anticipated fight.Quote:

From a purely boxing perspective Martinez should have fought 3G when he was at his best instead of at his worst. To then claim you need to fight him next rather the risk him getting better when he himself is in the twilight tells me he has no intention of fighting him.
I think you have to factor in Sergios slide along with Cotto's. Imo Sergio's has been more like an avalanche then a slide. Cotto's has been gradual. Gives a little credence to the phrase "growing old overnight". Sergio has looked terrible. He didn't look all that great even in his Chavez win. I think ring size is going to be a key player in this one. It remains to be seen if Cotto can take a planted shot from a guy over 170.

I don't get that. The fact that his name is in his mouth and its on some sort of table is a good thing. Martinez wasn't obligated or needing to do anything of the sort say in that window of a few years ago when Golovkin was still a question mark...still is in some regards..and planking a 1000 yr old Kassim Ouma. Now, today he is a known quantity and has had a couple breakout decent level opponents at MSG and its logical. Shit...all the power to the geezer frankly??? I can't see a comparison to slides really. I mean Martinez has remained in the drivers seat. oh yeah he has rolled the truck a few times but bottom line is he has maintained a winning streak and is one fight removed from absolutley clowning the manitee that is Chavez. Cotto has been stutter stepping for a while now. Tough all time comer I have nothing but respect for but he has been on a course of reset and retry. Man has taking some -serious- poundings ffs. Here he is again with a Rodriquez tko under his belt on reset and while impressive, Delvin was there as a showcase and a doormat to THIS oppurtunity..nothing more. I'm just saying man and not railing on you brother but this dude just can't win. If he says nothing he is ducking him, if he calls him out he WILL duck him lol, if he doesn't fight off injury he is retiring, and if he beats Cotto then he will retire with an excuse. i think that sergio will have an easy enough time against cotto to not sustain another injury. i hope that ggg can fight quillin before then. that would set up a huge fight between ggg and sergio.
Now, now don’t get to hasty. I just don’t think Martinez wanted to fight 3G and to be perfectly honest, at this stage in his career and given his physical erosion I cant blame him. After all the man has toiled in relative obscurity while the rest of the stars have rocketed to Godlike status. All the while haunted by the ghost of Carlos Monzon. That’s no easy road. Maybe he will fight him but what I’m saying is that he already could have a and even unified in the process. What he is saying in this report does not make any sense because 3G could have been taken out of the picture before this ever got started. Instead he has put it off and put it off but again I cant blame him for that in the practical sense. After all this is prize fighting. He probably got twice the cash slapping Jr around. His comments suggest to me that he does not want to fight but I can be a tad over analytical at times. Believe when I say that I would not fight 3G if I was close to 40 and on my way out the door. I think Martinez will be fine. He's older..he's not dead. Golovkin has finally hit his stride this last year, big name in the big time tele and thats his preogative to pop off and call for the best of the best. We can only hope that all eras or peaks transition and culminate in what so many -assume- as a formality or 'passing of the guard' here. Martinez was doing as all others and building base and if he was in fact in obscurity...could ya blame him? Looking at him line by line what I see is a guy who did nothing but fight about 3 top 10 contenders and slap the cheeto filled cheeks of a cash cow around as would any man looking to make a statement and showcase. Martinez was stewing on that one after the screw job he recieved and frankly it was great tv. You can't slow and speed up natural career progression and all bs aside, its Sergios shot to call and hes calling it. The best thing he can do now is steam roll Cotto, which I think he will, and fight a healthy return fight regardless of 1 or 12 rounds.
