Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
The guy was on his friggin bike the entire fight. That is quite a feat for a one legged man. Of course it was not the same Sergio from 3 years ago. Neither was it the same Cotto. Not everyone is Juan Marquez. He simply never recovered from round 1.
No way does a guy use his legs like he did if he had a bad knee. He was so much bigger, stronger, faster that he could have just stood in the pocket right? Anyway if someone would be so kind to point out the round and time when he lost the limb?

No just his fans that said Cotto was more shot then he was until after he got stopped. After that he was a cripple. I enclosed the post fight comments.
When he went under the knife is not an answer. My brother got a new hip and its better then the old one. People have been saying his knee was gone or they cant believe how bad he looked. He's been on the decline since Barker and Cotto has since Margarito. Cotto put in a masterful performance and all people can do is say how shot Sergio was.

Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
I think Martinez is trying to be honourable and not take anything away from Cotto. That is not to say that the state of Sergio's knees were the only reason Cotto was able to hurt him and then keep him off balance all night, but it is quite obvious that they were a big factor in the fight. It's not like people are all exclusive fans of one fighter over another either. Martinez has been a credit to the sport but we all saw that he was in serious decline before last night. I hold my hands up and admit that I thought as soon as Cotto decided to trade with Martinez then he would pay the price, and I was clearly wrong, but that does not mean tha I can ignore what my own eyes told me when watching the Argentinians clearly compromised movement. It is like the people who dismiss Golovkin purely on his record without acknowledging how he goes about his work and what they see in front of their eyes. Congratulations to Cotto. We will not know how he is going to fare as a middleweight until he faces somebody at that weight now that he is the man, but I would not bet against him unless he chooses to jump in the deep end with GGG.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
And yes I am a little pissed, because Golovkin did not get the chance to fight the man, and he may well now have to wait another hundred years to prove his ability to tie up everything in this weight class.

Fair enough. Good points
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
It's boxing isn't it ? the best rarely meet the best at both of their primes and you are right to remind everyone that Cotto is hardly a spring chicken himself. I would have loved to have seen Cotto fight Hatton at light-Welterweight and I think he may well have beaten Ricky but what a hell of a fight that would have been.

I know and agree, drives me fookin nuts. I knew..we all knew prior SX...Sergio had bad sticks but I still picked him to torch Cotto based largely on awkward shots and cutting Cotto up. My foot is still in my mouth and that's on me. Both guys were on decline and people who slight Cotto equally slight Martinez. He knew what he was getting into, its a big boy sport and Cotto rose to a higher occasion two fights removed from talking retirement etc. He earned it, and Martinez has earned to be remembered for more than a guy needing excuses or keyboard crutches. Sad finale that one. The good ones don't often go out clean.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
I was very critical of not only his legs but how he used them. I felt terrible after the fight because it probably came off dismissive of Cotto when that certainly wasn't my intention.
Here is what my eyes thought they saw.
Not a knee issue as much as a leg strength issue and how he moved not his ability to move. First, one foot was always in the air. Big step left with his lead leg, he's not in a good punching position while it is up or turned as it put him. Then big step sideways with his train foot, again he can't really punch with that foot in the air. Once he plants it down he is sturdy but he then moved his lead leg again. Constantly with no base under him. His balance was shook from early but some of that can be compensated by pure leg strength. And awkward fighters can generate power without having their legs under them from their legs. That's what makes them awkward. Being able to get power when you don't expect. But I saw about five times(not counting when he was stunned) where he went to make a simple movement and he sort of tripped because it didn't look like he had the strength in his legs to compensate for his movement.
I fully apologize if it came off I was dismissing what Cotto had done. That certainly wasn't my intention. I just didn't see leg strength from Sergio, I commented on how pencil thin his legs were at the weigh in. I thought they'd use the 14 months to build them up to stabilize the knee. I didn't see leg strength at the weigh in and I didn't see a solid base in the fight. Full props to Cotto for beating the hell out of him. And I use what I say about Sergios legs as no excuse for how wildly wrong I was about the fight. What happened happened I was just flat wrong. Probably the most wrong I've been since I under estimated a young Andre Ward. This one will stick with me for the shot to my ego. But it's awesome that Cotto got to put on such a show. Bariquas rejoice!

Cotto's punches made his knees go out.;D
Ass-whippings tend to do that.
Not once did I see Sergio buckle in pain or limping.
If GG did that to Sergio you'd hear no talk about knees...age..inactivity or any of that shit.
Martinez was always there for those shots...Cotto did his homework and followed his gameplan..that's boxing.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
I like both guys but Cotts left hook has return with a lot of bad intention. Cottos left hooks won the fight and not Martinez knees, thats bs.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
Lots of good, logical, intelligent, objective minds on this forum. We all know who they are. Then there's the haters. It should be difficult for me to be objective. It was our local hero who did the dismantling last night. But I'm a Sergio fan also. I've always admired Sergio's career and his class. Let's just say that both Sergio and Miguel have more class in their little toe than scumbags like Cesar Chavez Jr. have in their entire being. Which is why it's easier to root for them than for Junior, who has made a living sponging off his father's name. But I'm getting off track.
It's obvious to me that Martinez isn't what he once was. But he prepared very hard for this fight. By his own accounts, and his corner's, he was more physically ready for this fight than for the Murray fight, for which he admittedly did not give himself enough time to heal from his leg issues. There were no excuses given before the Cotto fight..... so why bring them out now after the fight?? Had Cotto been soundly beaten, the haters would've been crowing about how Cotto should have never been in the same ring with a proven middleweight champion and natural 160-pounder.
I wanted Cotto to win, but I feared it would be Martinez, due to the size difference, Sergio's handspeed (Cotto showed some pretty good hand speed of his own last night), the fact that Sergio is a southpaw, and the fact that Sergio had been in the ring with some pretty good (and big) middleweights.
Cotto came prepared. And he came out like gangbusters... going on the offensive early and whacking Martinez with every punch in his arsenal. Sergio didn't think Cotto could hurt him, but found out the hard way that Cotto's own punching power was being overlooked.
It was a great fight... I'm happy... and Cotto has done a lot toward cementing his legacy. Martinez's own legacy is sealed, IMO, as he's had a wonderful career by his own rights. It might be time to hang up the gloves, though.
And in answer to IamInuit's thread question: Maybe at some point you could tell the leg wasn't the same. But it wasn't before Cotto had taken him apart in the very first round. No excuses were offered by Sergio. He knew he had gotten hit a lot harder than he figured he would get hit.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
Martinez is lucky he wasn't in there with a hard-punching natural MW like GGG or Quillin.

You see I have no issues with people saying he had a bad knee. FFS I said the same thing prior to the fight but anyone who thinks that is the reason he lost the fight is a blithering idiot and most likely never watched the fight and I don't relish saying such things.
Quote:
“I got hit with the punch and I was cold and I never recovered after that,” Martinez admitted. “I tried to do my best and I want to apologize to the Argentine fans, and I want to thank all of the Puerto Rican fans for coming out.
“You've got to know when to win and you've got to know when to lose and I give all congratulations to Miguel Cotto.”
NOW if that injury to his knee was the cause then why is it not front page news with doctors reports, xrays and the whole nine yards? Pride? How is pride injured by a legit injury? I suppose he could have injured it again and we will see him in a cast next week but that most likely happened in rd 8.
Re: Somebody show me when Sergios knee fell apart
“The one thing he wanted me to tell all of you is that there were no excuses,” said Martinez’s promoter, Lou DiBella. “There was no problem with his knees. There was no problem with his hand. That he got caught in the first round by a great puncher, Miguel Cotto. He never recovered from that punch. … He was dizzy, basically, throughout the fight.
