Eastern Europe- doing the amateurs the way it's supposed to be done!
It's no secret that the top tier boxing talent is coming out of Eastern Europe... from Austria heading East, the talent and the quality of talent picks up tremendously.
Even so that even fighters from Asia, China and Thailand in particular, with the latter Thailand always having good stars but not as many international stars on volume, have been producing not only good fights but good talent as a result of the competition that is filtering Eastwards.
Eastern Europe has it right with their Amateur programming. The only place on the planet that has better programming is the Cubans... The USA can learn a lot from Russia, Khazakistan, Ukraine, Romania, Belarus and Bulgaria in particular.

I'd take that over Ireland, for the most part. Perhaps not Belarus, but certainly Romania and Bulgaria. jmo...

Yes it is very impressive but Romania and Belarus certainly arent up there. Romania have had 1 olympic gold medalist a long time ago and Belarus have had none. Romania had no significant fights at the 2011 or 2013 World Championships. I cant remember them doing anything impressive at European Championships recently either. Ireland regularly have fighters medal.

Medaling rather than looking at the composite of the entire boxing scene can be misleading.
America is a prime example. They have good crops of stable fighters and club fighters, on any given night you can get a new champion, but they don't medal as much as they used to anymore.
Mexico has a good crop of stable fighters and a fairly decent amateur program, especially at the Welterweight division and under- but they very rarely medal too.
You have to look at the wholesomeness of the program over one or two stars that make it big at the international level... there only can be so many guys that can win a medal at the Olympics.
Ducan Dokiwari and David Izon are examples of Nigerian talent, but one off talents that won medals at the Olympics- but the overall quality of boxing in Africa is mediocre, at best.
I'd say the system's in Eastern Europe- most notably Ukraine, Khazakistan and anyone that has joint programs with Russia- are on top in terms of their boxing program for amateurs along with Cuba.
Just that Eastern Eruope have done fairly better at producing more solid and exciting professionals than Cuba has over the course- but Gamboa and Rigondeaux have been surprising. More so Rigo...

Yes and the wholesome Eastern European countries that have good programs like Kazachstan, Russia and Ukraine medal a hell of a lot more than the countries that dont. Cuba also medal a hell of a lot more than the likes of Romania and Belarus who every now and then crop up with a decent fighter like Nigeria did.

Yeah we got some great fighters from the Eastern Europe up here in Swede nowadays!
