Which comes first offence or defense?
My old trainer who trained like scrap does has left gym I don't know why he left. there is a new trainer who claims to have been national trainer from another country before coming to our gym.The difference between the two is drastic my old trainer believed that offense comes first so he emphasized proper punching technique the new trainer wants defense first before punching technique which is the best?
Re: Which comes first offence or defense?
Punching technique and how to move your feet. When you train defense, you always train with the counter so you have to know how to punch and move your feet.
And many defensive moves are the exact same move as throwing a particular punch. The inside slip is the same as throwing a straight right; the outside is the same as throwing a left hook.

Yeah! Making sure that the shoulder touches the chin with the follow through is an excellent defense against the counter.

I agree with learning to move the feet first, that's definitely a priority. But in my opinion learning to punch ideally comes after developing the basics of footwork and being taught how to move the head using the legs and hips. Basically get the lower body right, then add in the punches. Learn from the ground up.[/QUOTE
Ahh!You think like my new coach!!! Everything starts with the feet...supposedly he was on the national team in his home country. The front foot is for balancing a lot of side to side and jumping in and out (pendulum)and straight snappy punches and short hooks coming from the front leg but first we must learn how to move our feet so we can do what he calls hitting with movement,or hitting while moving. Unlike my old coach who taught us first how to throw hooks falling backwards unto the rear leg and straight hard punches, countering and shifting all coming from the Back-foot.

JMS is on the right track.A thing we started doing 40 years ago, with that in mind. Ten pound weight disc in your hands, tucked under your chin elbows on your ribs, just working on movement and defense. Lean forward that disc gets heavy after a few rounds. ;D

I like that. Encourages good posture too, you start slouching and your shoulders have to do all the work, which they won't last long doing.

Plus puts pressure on the top vertebrata, not a good idea, stops neurological response.
