The Last Round - must watch boxing documentary! Ali vs Chuvalo

I saw this a few years back and recently rewatched it on DVD, man what a great doc and what a great insight into HW boxing in the 1960s!! Great stuff about Ali, Chuvalo, Patterson, Terrell, Frazier, Liston, ect!

That was a very interesting documentary.

Chuvalo was a tough man.

Ali should have gone for the body as there was no way Chuvalo was getting knocked out to the head.

Let's be honest about Chuvalo, he was a 34-11 borderline bummy opponent when Ali fought him, You cannot FORGET this!

And Chuvalo EARNED his shot at Muhammad by LOSING a fight to an inexperienced 11-2, 192lb Cruiser and in fact had lost 2 of his last 3 fights!

And despite being only 6' tall, 3" shorter and slower than Clay, the very poorly skilled Chuvalo was able to land on Clay at will as soon as Clay remained in range.

Watch as if you were a critic not an admirer. It is one of many good examples of the complete absence of reflexes of even the young Clay.

Chuvalo was tough.

There was no cruiserweight at that time so they were heavyweights

This was an old Ali who had lost to Frazier and had to rely on his chin and durability because his legs/reflexes were not the same.

Chuvalo wasn't a great fighter by any means but he took the Ali fight on a few weeks notice and gave him a hell of a fight.

He was a rough customer who always came forward, he gave hell to a lot of slick boxers of the time like Patterson and Terrell.

He was supposed to get a shot at Ali in '64 after he beat DeJohn (another Angelo Dundee fighter) but he was so rough and savagely beat Dejohn so bad that Cus kept Ali away from him.

bout which was scheduled for early 1966 hit a 'snag'.

In George's previous bout, he was 'out-boxed' by Eduardo Corletti, an Argentinian
who was based in Italy, and fought in the United Kingdom.

Yes precisely, George fought everywhere, he was a real man's man and no doubt got ripped off in several of those home town decisions, like Glen Johnson.

The Associated Press scored the bout for {24 1/2 year-old} Eduardo 'El Gato' Corletti ... 6-2-2 in Rounds.

Eduardo stood only > 5' 11 1/2" @ 191 lbs.
