having trouble landing punches
Hi, i have been boxing for about 2 years and if you were to see me on the heavy bag you would think i would be a future world champion. but i have a big problem i may have the thing called gloves shy because i fought someone that was alot bigger than me and 20 years older, i just turned 14. I come from a family of boxers and they say just wait until my muscles grow bigger i have about 13 inch arms. i think my only problem is i always fight people alot bigger, i am 5-7 about 1 47 in great shape. tell me what i can do to get over this. Re: having trouble landing punches
Are you having trouble beating their defense, or are you just plain old afraid to throw the leather? Or do you maybe just have terrible aim? Any help is really gonna depend on what you mean by trouble landing punches.
Re: having trouble landing punches
Well first off relax...you'll tire yourself out more if you are tense. Sparring is supposed to be a workout and it's also supposed to benefit both fighters so if the 34 year old is trying to knock you out, just don't spar with him! Another thing you might want to do is visualize boxing who you spar when you hit the heavybag...this way you trick your mind into feeling the flow of sparring so you go spar later and you feel more at ease.
You're only 14 don't get worried about getting hit or hitting someone, it'll come...I mean you throw enough punches you're bound to land something....and getting hit is just a part of boxing it happens
Re: having trouble landing punches
i am not afriad to get hit. i mean when your boxing the adrainline and your face goes num. i am basicaly haveing trouble getting threw some peoples defense. but whenever i fight someone my size i land alot of punches. i think i am just sparring with the wrong person.
Re: having trouble landing punches
well whats the prob then mate?
if your sparring guys a lot bigger, then you are gonna struggle to land your shots, but its all good training, if you can break down a bigger guy, like you said when your with people of your own size you are landing fine!
Whats your record like?
also its not surprising your not getting through a bigger guys defence, he can soak up more of your shots, and the danger of a counter is magnified, so you will be to an extent 'glove shy'
Re: having trouble landing punches
i have not fought yet just sparring i just broke my collarbone about 3 months ago just getting my musles back should fight in summer
Re: having trouble landing punches
Sounds like they got reach over yours and they control your distance with it.
Hell, have some fun with movment,if your getting tagged anyway ???
If they are bigger with longer reaches or controlling from behind a solid jab;
Go low ,weave and make them hunt you and you go under that lead arm ,close in under their lead arm,and pop up in 'your distance' and throw.
Or close in on their lead arm and choke them up (mes up their distance),just stay away from their rear arm and close the cap safley.
A short shuffle in the same stance will close the gap as you throw ,over the top of or around their extended lead arm.
Timing ,they poke out a jab you follow it home as it retracts and close on it, throwing again moving into new angles the whole time.
Go under their lead and throw a straight shot up the centre as you go under.
Start moving around more, make them shift to you and tag them as they adjust to you.Smack up the openings you create in between their adjustments.Throw as you move, throw from down low as you move in too. just plan your actions to one side of them at first (their weaker side).Close, attack and move away from their rear arm,all at once and then catch them again as they adjust to your new position and move again, throwing from all angles.
Re: having trouble landing punches
All right thanks everyone i will try some of that
Re: having trouble landing punches
I would link my body and head attack together to try and confuse the opponent my favorite is once the guy is against the ropes I use an old Tyson combo Left hook (body), right hook (body), left hook (head)...this brings the guard down and when I have used it I have had great success with at least one of the shots landing.

dont sweat it too bad. boxing is one of the more strategically complex systems known to man. only a select few men have ever been able to understand this sytem, even then only partially by and large. its not something you can learn in a couple days. it is a lifetime of learning. through it all you will be cut, bruised, embarrassed, intimidated and the like; all part of the gig though and everybody goes through it -- even the greats. what you must do is soak it all in as a learning experience, that is: every tape that you watch, every fight that you fight, every bag that you hit, every shadow that you box -- learn and never stop trying to learn. boxing must become your job and you a specialist in the field, not just a hobbyist playing tough guy in a gym.
Re: having trouble landing punches
May I suggest that you try being a bit afrid, at least, of getting hit? If you aren't you are probably a lunatic: getting hit hurts, causes damage to your body, and scores points for your opponent. So you try to avoid it but don't let it ruin you when it happens.
Plus, defense- the art of avoiding punches- might be the key to helping you land more punches against taller foes with reach advantages. As you come forward he can pepper you with punches and if getting hit it is hard to punch back; when you get a chance to punch he is most likely concentrating on defense and hard to hit. Which only proves an old saying: the easiest and most effective time to hit him is when he is trying to hit you.
Every single punch you or an opponent can throw leaves an opening, a vulnerable area that can be targeted...IF you make the punch miss you instead of eating it or taking it on the gloves (you need them to punch back!) You should make it a point to make him lead and it should be easy: you are shorter and coming forward so he'll want to get off first with his jab, right? Slip the jab so it goes over your right shoulder and throw a straight right to the heart and pull inside. He throws a jab-right hand catch the jab in your right glove slip outside the right and hook the body.
The possibilities are infinite, or at least numerous beyond my patience with typing, but do you see the idea? Create your offensive, punching chances with your defense. Try crouching a bit, your weight favoring your back foot, leaning a bit left (away from his right) and stay well to your right as you advance. This will make him (A) more apt to drop the left when he jabs and (B) reach with his right. You'll get hit less and will find it much easier to land good punches off of his misses.
