Weak hook
hi,
im just beginning to box and although i have a pretty quick, hard jab and straight punch, my hooks feel weak. they feel really slow and there isnt much power behind them.
what exercises would you recommend for strengthening and quickening a hook?
thanks.

Re: Weak hook
Just make sure that you turn your front foot and put your body into it to add power. when your in your boxing stance with your hands next to your chin, thats where you should throw the hook from, make sure you don't telegraph your punches.

Re: Weak hook
To throw a left hook begin in your basic stance. Move your right foot @2" directlyto the right, place it flat on the floor the toe at right angle to your opponent. Shift body wt to a straight right leg, turning the left hip and shoulder to the rt until reach the center line. The left arm remains in orig position until now when the tension created whips the left arm in an arc to the rt shoulder- you want the two large knuckles to touch your rt shoulder rt glove held high and inside the left arm. Start slow and build the pace as you feel the whip

Re: Weak hook
its all in the hips my friend ;)
punching, kicking (in my case for taekwondo), blocking...all power comes from the ground up and using the hips.
if you stand still and dont use the hips, you will not have a good amount of power behind your punches

Re: Weak hook
your not punchign with your arm atall, your using your turn of the body to whip your stationary and solidly held arm through your opponent.
hooks take a huge amount of practice to get right
