Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
There doesn't seem to be a Garcia Peterson thread, considering how tough it was to score early on and how close it turned out.
I think Peterson should have got the nod because he did what he wanted, he moved when he wanted and stood he ground when he wanted. Garcia didn't have much success at all, he hit air and gloves for most of the fight and the only rounds he won were because Peterson threw the round away. Peterson really took control of the fight in the second half and put a beating on Garcia and bullied him. Garcia looked average and all the top guys at WW would beat him; Thurman, Brook, Khan, Bradley, Maidana, Porter and no need to mention Mayweather or Pacquiao. Never liked Garcia and still don't. Just showed me why he never calls anyone out and is happy just having stay busy fights because he's shit and would get knocked out against the top dogs of WW.
Peterson was in great shape and was having fun in there, I think he needs to be drug tested again. :p
Mind you I wasn't sober last night ;D so feel free to correct me.
Toughts?
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
Wish I could contribute, Manos de Piedra. But I was at the Martinez-Salido fight. Coincidentally, they had the Garcia-Peterson fight on a flat screen TV in the box I was in, just in case someone wanted to watch that one, I guess. I managed to catch a few scattered glimpses, but that was all. The live fight was too good and I was too busy yelling for Martinez to knock Salido out.
From what little I did see, however, Danny did look kind of lethargic. I guess I caught pieces of some of the later rounds. Personally, as someone else mentioned on another thread, I think Danny has regressed since the Lucas Matthysse fight. That was probably the high point of Danny's career thus far. The reason for the regression seems unclear... I'm not ready to concede that he's never been that good in the first place. But the fact of the matter is he's tarnished. He's gonna have to do some heavy introspection if he wants to continue scaling the heights toward "elite-dom". I would say it's just a case of "styles make fights", but the fact is Danny hasn't looked good in awhile now. It'll be interesting to see where he goes now.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
I think if Peterson stopped pissing around and walked Garcia down earlier, he could have stopped him. Garcia looked tired and clueless towards the end. Garcia didn't win any real clear round whereas the rounds Peterson won were clear Peterson rounds. Gained some respect for Peterson, unless he gets caught on drugs again.Peterson didn't sit down between rounds either.
Another gift for Garcia thanks to Al Haymon. I scored it for Peterson even though I was trying to be nice to Garcia to cancel out my bias coz I don't like him.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
Peterson should have walked him down earlier... if he fought for an extra 10-20 seconds extra in the 3rd, 4th and 5th, he would have won easily.
He has a lot left in the tank in the end... he should have just won earlier rounds.
I have seen fighters try this late rounds model before, it can backfire as it did last night: Don't wait for the 6th or 7th to turn up, and the 8th if you are splitting the rounds prior in your mind, is just too late if you have something left in the tank.
If you have a strategy for the long haul, try to win at least two of the first five rounds. Just try...

I don't mean to be rude but quite simply you, like the judges, don't know what you saw. You didn't see what actually happened. Peterson did win early rounds. He just didn't do it the way you wanted. But that is supposed to be irrelevant. There are scoring criteria and by the scoring criteria Peterson won those rounds.
It's sad how many phony terms have been made up to cheat the proper scoring system like "fought negative" or "ran". There are rules, people need to stop making crap up and follow the rules. Peterson won that fight by the rules, that's why Garcia resorted to so much fouling. He knew he wasn't winning by the rules.
And even Gacia said "I lost, I lost" because Peterson first out boxed him, then he beat him up. He had Garcia any way he wanted him. He was the Ring General(a real scoring criteria)
That is all well and good, Ron. But in the end, if you're not going to end a fight by knockout, then you're fighting to win the fight on the judges scorecards. What you as a fighter think you're doing is irrelevant, let's face it. At the end of the night, outcries be damned, it's the judges who put either the "W" or the "L" on your record.
I think Ykda makes a very good point about too many fighters singing their own tune, by dancing away more than half the fight, not throwing too many punches... and saving their real efforts till the last couple of rounds, sometimes coming out like the house is on fire in the 12th round. News flash: If you've waited 11 rounds wasting away precious time and them come out like gangbusters trying to win the fight in the last round..... you damn well deserve to lose.
Not defending Garcia or trashing Peterson, as like I said before, I was watching another fight. But what Ykda says happens all too often. It's like the person crashing countless times into the same brick wall before finally getting smart and going around the wall.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
The problem is that in the early rounds, especially the first round, Peterson was making Garcia miss, but he wasn't making him pay. Simply dodging punches isn't enough to win rounds, you gotta counter too.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
Peterson has to be one of my least favorite fighters but I cannot see at all how this was considered a close fight. Peterson simply did what he wanted and his jab was sticking and resetting Garcia very effectively in those early rounds. Garcia was left in lurches and he looked flat and confused trying to catch up, his right hand early on was coming from his hip and very slappy. He could not sustain any form of attack and showed no form of a second gear.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
Lamont gave him a boxing lesson 1st half & a decent beating the 2nd 1/2. But as some have stated: some judges see aggression as a way to score- even though it should be effective aggression. Lamont's trainer knows this & should have turned the heat up by mid rounds-not after. They gave away the fight IMO.
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
in the old days you could actually win around by doing what Peterson did....defensive master piece from Peterson should have got the nod all night long
Job Biscuit (off on holiday now)!!!
eh eh!!!
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
Garcia was swinging and missing. Lamont showed his blackness and had to much rhythm for Garcia. Garcia was the guy in the club holding up the wall, while lamont was in the middle of the dance floor with a crowd around him.
Lamont whooped dGarcia ass, I guarantee garcia wants no parts of a rematch
Re: Peterson vs Garcia - Thoughts
It seems Garcia is the house fighter that they want to keep undefeated and set up for Floyd Mayweather.
I have not seen the fight but this looks like a marketing ploy to keep Garcia relevant.

Showed his Blackness? Does that mean Garcia wasn't showing his Puerto Ricaness?

Had to fix it ;D. Seriously though, the catchweight charade Garcia is apart of lastnight and with Matthysse, the mismatch Salka set-up job...it just doesn't pass the smell test. Then he says he'll rematch Peterson but it has to be 147 ffs.
