I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
That's what I'm watching now, old clips of Dwight Muhammad Qawi (Braxton) from the glory days of the LH and Cruiser division.
I get into these kicks from time to time, when I go back to watch old fighters and run the gambit on their best and not-so-great moments.

Dwight Braxton
I saw Dwight back in 1979 at 'Resorts International' in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
A 'short' but powerfully-built Fire-Plug.
He was listed at 5' 6", but that is with {1"} shoe shim-lifts.
The word going around, was that he was 'too' muscle-bound to ever develop into a good
fighter.
Big Muscles/No Power
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
His height, or lack thereof came to mind for me as well. Says alot for his determination as a fighter at CW

Watch some Micheal Spinks and Bob Foster fights.
Those guys make you realize how far the 175 divsion has slipped.
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
Braxton had some top fights with Franklin , the Camden Buzzsaw great nickname .
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
Here is an 'early one'
Thursday ~ November 2, 1978
Audobon Ballroom ~ New York City, New York
The Audobon Ballrrom was located in Washington Heights {drug haven}, at
3040 West Broadway $ West 156th Street.
* Johnny Davis - 3-0-0 {1 KO} ~ 5' 10" ~ 175 lbs. ~ {Age; 25 years, 3 months}
vs.
* Dwight Braxton - 1-0-1 {0 KO's} ~ 5' 5 1/2" ~ 174 lbs. ~ {Age; 25 years, 10 months}
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Skinny ~
Johnny Davis was the 'highly-touted' Light-Heavyweight from West Hempstead, Long Island.
Johnny had won both the 1975 and 1976 New York Golden Gloves at Light-Heavyweight.
Also, Johnny was doing his training at the famous 'Time Out Gym'.
Both fighters got a 'late start' to their Professional Careers.
Dwight Braxton was 'fill-in' substitute opponent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite what was stated by {Box/Rec} >
Johnny Davis had to withstand the constant-pressure of 'The Camden Buzzsaw' during the
first 2-Rounds.
Johnny was caught off-guard during the fist 2-Rounds, and Dwight bulled him into the Ring Corners,
and pounded away at Johnny's body with an unrelentless attack.
But Johnny was the better boxer during the middle-Rounds {3 and 4}, and out-hit the shorter
Braxton by a 3-to-1 margin, including bloodying his nose in Round 4.
Johnny used good footwork in Rounds 3 and 4, and avoided getting bulled and trapped into the
Ring Corners, as Dwight had slowed down {a gear}.
Round 5 was a 'maul-fest', with Dwight forcing Johnny into a Ring Corner, where he mauled his
body with short hooks into Johnny's sides.
But Johnny covered up well, and waited to counter Dwight at the opportune time, by landing
fast '3-Punch' combinations when Dwight slowed down.
The last Round {Round 6} was 'nip-and-tuck'.
Dwight came out fast, and immediately backed Johnny up into a Ring Corner, and wailed at him
with a non-stop assault.
But just around the {1:40 Mark}, Johnny countered, and caught Dwight with a big right-hand to
jaw that stopped ''The Camden Buzzsaw' in his tracks.
Dwight was 'frozen' for about 2-Seconds, and Johnny ripped away with a '12-Punch' barrage to
Dwight's head.
But, Dwight recovered and {then 'smiled' at Johnny} at the {2:10 Mark}, and came back with
another solid body-attack until the Bell.
Johnny Davis was awarded a 6-Round Split-Decision.
Scorecards
* 3-2 > {Johnny Davis}
* 3-2 > {Dwight Braxton}
* 3-2 > {Johnny Davis}
By those spectators at the Audobon Ballroom {Attendance; 1957}, most felt that the bout should
have been ruled a 'Draw'.
But, Johnny was the New York Golden Gloves Champ {1975 and 1976}, and he was the New York
City favorite.
Dwight Braxton was an unknown 'bully' from Camden, New Jersey.
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
Holy field v quawi was war of attrition.
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!

Just a great fight to watch.
fans who like to rip on fighters as not worthy of a title shot with 20+ wins or claiming padded records, need to look at Evander's record going into this fight. Less than 2 years pro at that.
His fights with Saad Muhhamad were some good ones & beating Spinks so easy, wow. Leon that is.

That's the way it was ^^^.
It was a Thursday Night fight promotion by Matchmaker/Promoter - Johnny Bos.
There were 6-Bouts on the Fight Card.
The 'Main Event' was between > Teodoro 'Teo' Osuna vs. Ray Roman in a Light-Welterweight Bout.
Johnny Davis received {$200} for the bout.
Dwight Braxton received {$150}, plus another {$25} for Travel Expenses.
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
Still hold what he did to Saad against him ;D. That was brutal! First thing I remember live was him snorting, mean mugging and bouncing bombs off of Big Georges head early ;D Crazy that he came within a hair of cruiser trinket after that. Gotta love that drive and he maxed out his tools on the plus side
Wasn't Qawi v Scott the last pro boxing at Rahway prison?
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
~ Dwight Braxton to fight in South Africa ~
February 4, 1980
Dwight Braxton got an offer to go to Durban, South Africa to take on local hero
and 'highly-touted' Theunis Kok.
If I remember correctly, Dwight got a lot of 'flak' for accepting this bout in
South Africa because of apartheid.
Many other Light-Heavyweights turned down this bout {offer} to go there.
Dwight took the bout, because the money {$2000} at the time, was the most that
he had ever seen. It included '2' Round-Trip airline tickets, plus all expenses while
in Durban, South Africa.
At the time, Dwight {Age; 27 years, 1 month} only had '7-Bouts' under his belt
at 5-1-1 with only {1 KO}.
The bout was a 10-Rounder, and Dwight must have looked like a 'safe' American
Light-Heavyweight.
Theunis Kok, {Age; 22 years-old} was a murderous-puncher, and had a record of
8-0-0 with {7 KO's}, and was already ranked at #10 WBA.
He was a 'tall-and-lanky' southpaw at 6' 3", but he could really punch.
Theunis was trained by none other than Angelo Dundee.

In the rematch with Holyfield, Evander caught him with a good left hook and finished it quickly.
Re: I'm on a Dwight Muhammad Qawi kick now!
Thursday ~ February 4, 1980
King's Park Stadium ~ Durban ~ KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Attendance ......... { 13,000 } 'Sell-Out"
Theunis Kok ~ 8-0-0 {7 KO's} ~ 6' 3" ~ 177 lbs. ~ {#10 WBA}
vs.
Dwight Braxton ~ 5-1-1 {1 KO} ~ 5' 6" ~ 176 lbs.~ {Not Rated}
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 22 year-old 'southpaw' South African gave Dwight Braxton 'fits' over the first 7-Rounds, as
the 6' 3" tall Theunis Kok landed 'right-hand' after 'right-hand' on the 'short-and-stocky' American.
Theunis also added in a variety of left-hand bombs on Dwight's chin > leaving him baffled, bewildered
and embarrassed.
It was as Dwight later stated > "A back-alley Dog fight."
But, American Trainer - Angelo Dundee was worried that Theunis was losing steam, as he started to
fade in Round 8.
On the other hand, the 27 year-old Braxton {who hade never fought past 8-Rounds before} was still
coming.
Coming out for Round 10 {Final Round}, Theunis was well ahead in the bout in Rounds {5-2-2}, but
he was tired and fading fast.
In Round 10 > Dwight started unloading his overhand-right, and after shaking Theunis, Dwight came
back with 'hard' right-hand to the jaw hit-the-floor, where the South African was counted out at 1:49 of
Round 10 by Referee - Peter Conradt.
The South African - Theunis Kok was 'laid out' on the canvas for several minutes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ After Bout Comments ~
Angelo Dundee >
"That New Jersey Light-Heavyweight {Dwight} Braxton is 'no' 7-Bout Pro. He fought like an
experienced 25-Bout veteran."
"I believe we were sent 'a ringer'. I know all those fighters at Joe Frazier's Gym in
Philadelphia, and I'm going to find about this guy {Dwight Braxton}."
"My guy {Theunis} only had 8-Bouts coming into this bout. He's good, but not that experienced
yet. But this guy {Dwight Braxton} fought like a 'seasoned' Pro over the last 3-Rounds, when he
should have been tired."
