Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
Ever since the Matthysse fight, Garcia has seen his career fall by the wayside with questionable decisions and unremarkable opponents. By contrast, Matthysse took a tough fight against Provodnikov and his star shone bright with one of the better fights this year. Is it possible Garcia's confidence took a hit even though he won the fight? He was shook a couple of times that night against Matthysse, although he certainly secured the victory, and he hasn't faced another puncher. Now he is facing a semi-retired Paulie Malignaggi.
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
After seeing that uncomfortable look in Garcia's face at Matthysse's previous fight, I'd think the win must have given him more of an ego boost than anything else.
You'd expect someone to grow even bigger after beating what seemed to be such a KO monster. (and he must have felt a lot of relief, too).
I'll have to watch it again but Matthysse taking something from him? Nah.
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
For sure it's possible, but no reason to think Garcia necessarily took more damage of the two. Matthyse has been in better fights since, but Molina and Provodnikov both put plenty of hurt on him, and I feel like Garcia at least might have looked better against those guys than he did against Herrera and Peterson. I think an immediate rematch would have been better for both probably, and would still like to see them do it again.

I think it's been more that he's been struggling to make 140 and doesn't look big enough to handle 147, plus his power doesn't seem to be there. Some people are just crucified when they get naturally bigger and getting those last couple of pounds off makes them a shell of their former selves. Probably Matthysse was the last time he could make it unaffected.

His last fight with Peterson was a catchweight of 143, surely that would have suited him if it were down to that? He had a few bad showings before fighting Mattyhse, Kendall Holt or the first one with Morales at least, he didn't really look better there than he has recently. I feel like Garcia and Matthysse both get overrated by a lot of people on here, Terrence Crawford would spank them both badly imo.
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
I don't think so. I think it has more to do with the styles he's faced since giving him trouble.
Danny Garcia has a long history (since his amateur days) of looking mediocre in spots but finding a way to win.
I think the weight issue has hampered him more than anything. He should probably move up to 147.

Nah. Danny did Danny. He went on to take Herrera lightly and also took the Salka fight. That makes it almost a full calendar year where he did not have to train for top quality opposition- that means light training, light sparring and low quality sparring partners because you did not need them.
Then he decided to fight at a higher catchweight with Peterson who is more of a natural Welterweight and one of the top-flight fighters at this time. Disaster...
Danny is again doing himself no favours by fighting Paulie Malignaggi next. And at Welterweight, he will be deluding himself and I dare say the ride that was Danny Garcia is coming closer to a halt than first predicted. Not that Paulie is a world beater at this stage, but who else at Welter should he be expected to beat if he is not fighting top guys at that weight?
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
Yes, he took a lot of left hooks. ;D As was said above he is really a welterweight who has been just barely making 140 for awhile now. If you look on boxrec at his weights he's been on the plus side of 140 for most of his fights. He needs to move up.
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
He now has moved up to 147.
How do we explain why he's stayed away from punchers since the Matthysse fight? Herrera, Salka, Peterson, and now Malignaggi. That seems more like a pattern than random.
Re: Did Lucas Matthysse Take Something from Danny Garcia?
I think it may be tougher fight than Garcia expects. Really smart choice when moving up...a decently famous name with no punch, who gave some good fights recently but is more likely to break his hands or get tangled up in his weave dreadlocks(Ndou fight)' than hurt you.

That was the first haircut during fight I ever saw. ;D
