Fighters who have been "set back" after a loss
I think most people had their eyes set on a Mayweather/Matthysse matchup and assumed Matthysse steamroll through Garcia on the Mayweather/Canelo undercard. The end result would have been a massive buildup of them going against each other. Instead, Garcia put on a clinic and Matthysse hasn't made it back potential A-list territory. It's been almost 2 years.
Lennox Lewis losing to Oliver McCall. Took him 5 years to get a crack at the title again. Mainly due to Don King's stranglehold of the division at that time.

Tommy Morrison v Michael Bentt - Tommy had an 8 million dollar fight in the making with Lennox Lewis, went up in smoke on a 1st round TKO loss to the unknown Bentt.

R-U sure it was 5 years? WBC flopped into a few hands McCall to Bruno, then Tyson & Evander had the WBA locked up in '96 & the IBF title was vacant. I think Moorer fought Schultz for it in 1996. Lewis only fought some no-namers in 1995 +Morrison & only once 1996 Mercer?

Thing is Matthysse has arguably run even if not surpassed Garcia in the bigger pitcher. He's looked more convincing and robbery free against the better competition excluding semi retired fight commentators at least.

Mares has taken his time.
Or are we talking guys that were robbed and were set back due to the loss?

Roger Leonard
Ray Leonard's brother.
Was in line for a WBA Light-Middleweight Championship bout, but ran into
a 'limited' but dangerous Mario Maldonado.
