I used to do Jiu-Jitsui when I was younger and broke all three bones in my left arm fighting/sparring with a friend. Both of our Kids did Taekwondo and it made me feel a bit more relaxed knowing my daughter could defend herself, (her Aunty had loads of tournament success and medals, so she had the best extra class tuition as well) and my step son is built like a barn door, and despite being quite placid, was never afraid to stick up for himself even and others, even when out numbered.
A lot of people frown on martial arts but seriously the lessons you learn from them are very applicable in other parts of life, and things like horse riding and gymnastics etc are actually just as, if not more, dangerous.
