Sad and happy about floyds retirement
This is if he actually stays retired like he says.
The good thing is that we get away from the mayweather sweepstakes and hopefully get the best fighting the best. It's weird how such a good fighter can hold a sport back (not money wise but good matches wise). There will be a gaping hole at welter that must be filled. I'm excited about that.
I'm sad because for me, mayweather is really the only fighter left from when I started watching boxing. I consistently starting watching it in the year 2001 and there are still fighters who are fighting that were once good (like Jones or Mosley), but mayweather has literally been a big name in boxing since I started watching. So its kind of an end of an era for me. From now on, I will see when people begin their careers and see them end it.
So I'm happy to see him go but kind of sad because of nostalgia at the same time.

Floyd Marmite Mayweather you love him or hate him, a defensive marvel not to everybody's
taste but a hell of a fighter, fighters like Floyd are few and far between he had the ablity to
make very good fighters look average,! he gave JMM a boxing master class that was pretty
special in my eyes, Yep you would have to say a great fighter 49-0 is a fine record.:)

Yep the way he dealt with one of our favorite and sharpest modern day fighters JMM was the real deal.

Judah, Tzyu, Mitchell, Hatton, Mosely, Oscar, Forrest, mayorga, those were all exciting times at jr welter n welter.
Yeah fuck we are so lucky, what a great era to have seen and some live, also the Mexican featherweight wars, and Rjj at middle, nearly every weight had its odd moment and lit up for while.

I feel old; Lil Floyd came along just as I stopped going to shows and buying all the mags and restricted my boxing to TV and then Internet.
I would say though, he is the last of a generation of American superstars from day one, unlike say a Hopkins, who had to build a reputation over many years.
That said I sadly note the corpse of RJJ's career is still stinking up a few joints.

I think I started watching at around the same time as you pair by the sounds of it, I'd also like to throw Morales and Barrera in the ever growing list of boxers from that era.
Gutted if Floyd does stay retired because I'm a big fan but as I said in the fight thread it will be better for boxing if he is out of it because it will open up the big fights between everyone else in that weight class

I am also a little happy and sad about Floyd retiring. Sad because he's my all time favourite boxer to watch, I had only seen clips of him up until the gatti fight and watched the gatti fight live on TV and have been hooked ever since. I'm also happy because he's almost 40 now and has been on the decline now for years although still a level above everyone else, age will eventually catch up to him if he keeps fighting on and don't want to see an old Floyd lose to someone who he would have destroyed in his prime.So glad he's retired and wouldn't mind seeing him 1 more time for that 50th win but that's it.

Happy because its as if a cork screw is removed from a bottled up division. Feels like the zoo keeper has left and the cage doors have opened. Well , we can hope at least. The welters are stacked! It has a feel of every man for himself now that the golden ticket has left. But in the back of our minds and as history has shown..the majority come back and with the command, fame and capital I think its a certainty Mayweather will do it again. Sad..not so much. The man is a craft master and defensive wiz regardless of if you like him or not. He's obviously had great influence to many young guys under his wing and a few with some serious promise. With Mayweather behind the scenes and off the stage its time for a new era. Be fun to watch.

Fought people when they were past their prime (Hernandez, De La Hoya, Mosley, Pacquiao), coming off a loss (Judah), had been stopped within the past few years (Cotto, Pacquiao, Mitchell) coming up from smaller weight divisions (Hatton, Marquez, Pacquiao, Guerrero).
Avoided Tszyu, Williams, Margarito, Forrest, prime Pacquiao, prime Cotto, prime Mosley, and many others.
A man notorious for beating up women, finally went to jail for it.
Had shady referees (Cortez with Hatton & Ortiz, Bayless in several fights) and judges (Castillo I, Maidana I) to help when needed.
Used an ILLEGAL IV injection, a type that hides PED use. Rumored to have something shady going on with USADA, hiding past positive test results.
Disparaged former great boxers, claiming superiority over them.

Maybe a year from now they will set up the lark for him to come out of retirement to face the winner of Cotto/Alvarez for the middleweight title. Like I've said for years, just like Leonard. Difference being that Ray actually fought the real middleweight champion. Oh I know there is a contract for the upcoming winner to face that other guy but we both know what that means, diddly squat.
The WBC is famous for their situational ethics. Besides can you imagine the numbers?????? That other guy would probably get 5 mil to sit that one out unlike the 6 figures he settled for for Cotto/Alvarez.
There is simply no way that he goes out in a ceremony like that. He's got way to big a head. No way is that tie with Marciano good enough for that ego even if its downplayed. The whole thing reeked of disingenuous. The praise of Al Haymon and the entire gig suggests it was not the last. It was Reality tv. Look for something big in association with Haymon by about this time next year for May 5th of the following one.

I agree with some points. You gotta understand though, it was all an act. A persona. He knew what he was doing and it worked. I noticed in the Berto fight during the post fight interview, he sort of wanted to drop the act. That "Are you the best ever?" question, he got stalled and hesitated to turn his persona on. Personally, I'd put him up there. I just hate how it feels like he ducked some people.
