What a weird fight! Why did he do it?! Weird ambience, too
Re: What a weird fight! Why did he do it?! Weird ambience, too
Maybe the best entrance ever on boxing history, and he was competitive. But why did he do it? It was wrong all wrong. But Ali and his public could not let it go.
Jeez I remember when Ali was working with Tim Witherspoon for the Bruno fight and was seen doing roadwork with Witherspoon in Hyde Park (I know, I was shocked too; Witherspoon did roadwork for the Bruno bout! ;)), the British press went mental speculating on a comeback, and we are talking 1986 here...

can you imagine if he'd staged a comeback in '86........... there would still be people thinking he had gotten enough of a rest to make another try. He'd be Foreman's age (44) in '86 when George beat Moorer in '94.

The scary thing is you are right. Tyson was only just hitting the scene and plenty were skeptical of him. And the division was in such a state that if he did announce his comeback I am sure some would have figured he had a chance.
Not least because Berbick had just won a piece of the title and his fight with Ali was competitive; Spinks was good but small and Witherspoon although seemingly the best was hardly setting the world on fire with his 'brilliance'...

I did not realise Ali did some road work with Witherspoon.
