Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
I saw an article in 2014 talking about his walking weight as high as 160lbs. Such a disappointment with his level of talent and lack of activity. I really liked watching him progress in the fight and ultimately take over as the rounds progressed. Maybe the guy was just getting board?
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
Hadn't even thought about him... Quite rare to see boxers in his position just up and leave. He was a young undefeated world champion, and always looked pretty damn good. If his heart wasn't in it, he was never found out for it and that's impressive as he fought a few at least very solid guys. Hope he made a bit of cash and does something else.

I wondered what happened to him too. He was a very good fighter and had a chance to be one of the top 5 in the sport. A big what if fighter for the future.
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
As stated above, he had contract disputes with top rank. He wanted to be free and clear. Im not sure how the contract is structured. (whether is based solely on fights or if there is a time/inactivity escape clause.) He mentioned he was willing to fight crawford and beat him (his words) if it freed him of the top rank contract. I think hes back in the gym and plans were to be back from april to the summer at welter. The plans could have changed though I read this maybe about a month to month and half ago maybe.
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
Such a sad waste of talent and prime years of a fighters. Promoters need shooting for tying up fighters careers and livelihoods.
Garcia must really despise Arum that he will not fight. Most fighters would just get on with it and earn some money rather than effectively going on strike.
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
Arum had a bunch of interviews with mentions of Garcia back in late 2014. You could tell Bob was being a massive douche acting as if its all Mikey's fault.

Arum still wants to make money out of every fighter so I am sure he would let him leave the contract for a fee which GBP or Al Hayman could provide.
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
Definitely bit of a mystery as he was blazing a path with successful jump to Jr lightweight and seemingly bit fights ahead. Top notch talent but struck me as a guy with maybe some motivational issues. Weird how there was nothing official or even unofficial for time out, heads up to fans etc. Best thing to come of it might be the Crawford fight didn't come off on him.
Re: Mikey Garcia inactive for over 2 years.
I'd forgotten about him too. What a dick. There's no way he'd ever make up the money he lost by just not fighting for Arum until his contract ran out. Obviously there's more to it than him simply claiming Top Rank making him wealthy* in his early twenties isn't good enough. Probably motivation, too much too soon. Like Gamboa or Chavez Junior.
*A quick google shows me he made 220k for beating Salido for the title. That seems a decent payday for a challenger at that weight against a champion that the TV people don't care about. So he had three bigger paydays after that while looking promising and then decided he was too grand to fulfil his contractual obligations. Idiot.

Mikey Garcia was one of my favorite fighters.
Sadly, he's one of many talented boxers who have had their careers ruined by the greedy old snake Bob Arum.

Garcia should have settled sooner.
