What could Shane have done to finish off Floyd in the 2nd Round?
This is always a recurring topic around groups of people when Floyd Mayweather's name comes up or when at a fight party. "Shane had him, he HAD him"
It seemed as if Mosley was even taken aback himself that he got in a shot that clean as effective and just couldn't follow through quickly. To Floyd's credit, he did recover quickly, but those couple seconds Mosley stood there idle under Floyd's clinch (a rather weak and escapable clinch at that) were costly. Real knockout fighters know precisely what to do and what combination/angle of punches to throw when their opponent is hurt....and waste no time in doing so, even if the other guy is holding. You think a guy like Duran would have blown that opportunity?
So the question remains: What should Shane have done exactly to capitalize, if it all possible?
I swift right uppercut wold have been perfect IMO. Floyd's chin was wide open right after he had gotten back into his stance. Who knows how more wobbly he would have been after catching a shot right on the button...
Re: What could Shane have done to finish off Floyd in the 2nd Round?
Short answer: nothing.
As I'm watching- 2:09 round 2.
Jab to the body sets up killer Right hand, Floyd IMMEDIATELY clInched that arm.
Took him 2-3= seconds to unlock that arm by literally throwing Floyd off.
Throws right hand two more times- Floyd moved in to smother (where U suggest upper cut?)
1:56 Shane steps back to give him space to launch another bomb.
1:22 -Seems like he's going to the body as a decoy, Floyd dressed down in defence.
1:16 So Shane loops a bomb over hand, Floyd knees buckle like a MF! See IMO most would have fallen.
Floyd tries to grab, had no c strength to, so he backs to the ropes as Shane throws 2 rights that miss the mark. Then to the body.
This shot and the one at 2:09 Shows/proves why Floyd has never been dropped. Just a standing 8 count when his glove scraped the canvas.
Floyd shook it off. IMO Shane's body language was "well...that was my best"

Mosley could have used a time machine at that exact moment. A younger Mosley with stamina and output would have been able to do a lot more that round and likely sustain himself better had Floyd survived. As it was, Mosley was too old and was spent after the round was through. Credit where credit is due though, Floyd survived the onslaught of a 38 year old and pot shotted his way to victory once more.
Re: What could Shane have done to finish off Floyd in the 2nd Round?
The death grip that floyd had on shane's arm was like a bucket of cold water. Shane's body posture immediately changes to maintain his balance (holding him and floyd up). Its a double edge sword really, because you want to hurt him and not let him get a rest (count, getting up from a fall, having his gloves wiped etc... remember vegas is floyd country so the bayless would have cleaned his gloves, found some loose tape, found something in floyds eye and called the doc in, called his mother etc etc).
Shane tried to free himself and then start the forward aggression again and floyd was waiting in the shell to block the first shot and tie up that arm again . Someone like like tyson had great footwork when it came to righting himself when being pushed back or leaned on, by switching his feet and get his waist turned and doubling the force of the shot (opponents wait leaning down and the uppercut coming up). (http://i36.tinypic.com/23r3ebr.jpg) or i believe someone has rapid fire uppercuts and a switch uppercut gif in their signature. It's hard to do when someones clinching you though (which is partially why evander clinched mike so effectively-- other part of it was mike let his skills slip in prison.-- he was in shaped but the combos, the head movement, the footwork, etc wasn't there)
Anyway, back to floyd and shane. If you're shane, and floyds pulling you down, swing on the way down and make sure you come down on him with all your weight. fist forearm or elbow, pushing his head into the canvas (dont be obvious but keep the buzz going). On second shot that had floyd teabagging the canvas, Shane just starts trying to land upstairs through and around floyds guard and then decides to go downstairs first and try to land what got him the opportunity, but by that point floyd was reading him and shane had just gone to the well once two often. After you've had your bell rung, your timing is off so the downstairs shot was a mistake in my opinion because it helps your opponent times you... and I would have feinted low and then threw high straight through the elbows and got the hooks going around the side and target the liver (floyds not dropping his hands no matter what for the first couple) then switch it up. But all this is easy to say in hindsight... in the heat of the moment, shanes just thinking throw everything but the kitchen sink. Really you need someone who's style was based on exploiting floyds style. The best finishers are guys that aren't doing anything special, just compressing their style and pushing the action at a faster pace. Tyson, RJJ, tito, hearns, Tszyu, GGG, Kovalev... they know where you were and what they could get you with and set you up. Just my opinion of course.

Indeed it was a death grip on that arm.
As far as stamina, I think whatever stuff he admitted to using was for stamina, not power, which imo contributed to the drop in his punch output.
As his previous fight he not only beat Margarito down, he was the smaller man. Did he age in between?
Re: What could Shane have done to finish off Floyd in the 2nd Round?
His best shot was to stop listening to that corner who tried to convince him he could match speed and actually box with Mayweather at that stage. Young or old-ish Shane would do that multi half or throw away jab immediately followed by loaded right hands and Mayweather read the book.
Re: What could Shane have done to finish off Floyd in the 2nd Round?
That was the most shaken up Floyd has ever been in his career. Shane could have tried and do a Duran and just hit anything and everything going wild and unpredictable on Floyd, maybe even turn southpaw.

Everyone that I watched this fight with had come to 2 conclusions: 1.Floyd got rocked. 2. Afterward he put on an advanced clinic.

Floyd's last virtuoso as a defender AND puncher.
