Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
You always hear of Hagler, LaMotta, and Ali, but a fighter who I think belongs right up there along side them for most iron jaw is The Body Snatcher, Mike McCallum. McCallum was in wars and was never KO'd in 49 fights. He went toe to toe with a prime middleweight James Toney for a draw, beat Seve Collins and Michael Watson, stood up to one of the hardest punchers in history, Julian Jackson (AND knocked him out in only 2 rounds), and at the age of 40, even though getting badly outboxed, went the distance with a prime Roy Jones. If you fought McCallum, you were in for a long nights work.
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
pretty solid, he was never Ko'ed but he got knocked down a few times
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
"The Most Underrated Chin in Boxing" is ONE that hasn't been HIT. ;D
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Hopkins & Wright's names spring to mind for me.
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Vitali Klitschko's also springs up.
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
McCallum is on my list of all-time greats, a steady and disciplined boxer-puncher who was ducked quite a bit when he was in his prime. He didn't have quite the charisma of a few of his contemporaries such as Michael Nunn, James Toney, Julian Jackson or Terry Norris but his record speaks for itself. His style was unique: a well-conditioned outside boxer with a good jab, instead of tying up inside he would throw energetic flurries of body shots when an opponent workd his way inside on McCallum. His great chin served him well on the inside or the outside. I saw many of his fights, all the way from when he was in his prime until he was nearly 40 years old.

Watch the Vazquez fight.... ;)
To my mind Frank Bruno had a great chin.
Before you hang me, watch the Jumbo Cummings (the scene at the end of the first, where the 5' nothing Lawless, is trying to get the 6'4" Bruno back to the right corner, is a sight to behold) or Bonecrusher fights, the man took some serious right hands flush, with no defence or even a reflex flinch, and yet remained on his feet for Cummings, and for an amazing amount of time with Smith.
And he took some serious punches against Tyson, and was only decked once in two fights; and against Lewis.
Re: Most Underrated Chin in Boxing
Maybe emanuel Agustus.. He's pretty much taken everyone the distance and never been badly hurt or out on his feet.. His one stoppage loss was apparently a UD loss, he just lay down for the 10 count at the end because he knew he lost.. Typical clowning for the crowd. Also... Byrd, has a very good chin.. Oliver McCall obviously, but I think that's almost all he's know for so it's not underrated.. And for anyone who hasn't seen this guy, I haven't personally, I swear his chin must be reinforced steel, he's some sort of freak.. Just look at who he has fought, and at what age. It defys everything imaginable.
