Question for British: what would happen in your country if THIS happened?
I know you guys and gals have tougher/stricter speech laws, so just seriously wondering what would happen if a Congressman/member of Parliament did THIS

Absolutely nothing would happen.
Probably wouldn't even make the news.
Re: Question for British: what would happen in your country if THIS happened?
I suppose it might be picked up on by a very small minority of people, who could idiotically post it on their social media feeds or on websites (the sort of people who enjoy feeling outraged or insulted)
Otherwise, I doubt whether anyone would care. It certainly would not be headline news or anything.
I mean, who cares what some minor league nobody says or thinks?
We do have some laws about inciting hatred etc but these are really about 'groups' of people rather than individuals. So, for example, I think someone who said all gays should be assassinated might get into a bit of trouble (but it's only a fine), but that wouldn't apply to saying that a single gay should be killed (as long as it wasn't because they were gay, which makes it an attack on all gay people)
I think that's how it works here?
Re: Question for British: what would happen in your country if THIS happened?
So long as the appropriate parties 'condemn' the comments all is good. There is a great need to condemn certain actions and boy if you dont condemn them.....
It reminds me of Catch me if you can.
Dr Harris do you concur?
Eh?
Do you concur with Dr Ashley?
Duh?!
We should x-ray and stitch him up.
We done Dr Ashley.
Damn it!! I should have concurred!
So long as we keep levels of condemnation high, everything is fine.

@Master @Beanz I dont get it. So in UK "Paki" or other "derogatory" terms are ILLEGAL HATE SPEECH, but hoping or calling for assassination is a nothing burger? Here in the US it is the opposite, and therein lies many of our disagreements.
assassination/Killing references of politicians are much more heinous. Who wouldnt aagree??? WEIRD.

I thought you believed in Free Speech? Why is an elected politician more important than a normal person? You think we are weird because we don't find talk of killing one single politician more heinous than people threatening to kill whole groups, races or demographics?
It is weird how hypersensitive you seem to be to anyone saying anything about Trump.

Re: Question for British: what would happen in your country if THIS happened?
It's very true that there are many differences, culturally ideologically economically and politically between many in the US and the UK.
In fact, the cause of most misunderstandings between our politicians, tourists and also business people is that we make the mistake of not remembering that each is really a foreign country.
Having said that, our shared language and general values give us much more in common than there are dividers.
I can't think of any country where British people have so much in common with the inhabitants. Germany, maybe, but the language divides as does our recent history.

Re: Question for British: what would happen in your country if THIS happened?
I've never understood why "Paki" is a bad name certainly people understand it's just a shortening of the word Pakistani....same deal with "Jap" when referring to the Japanese, it's still considered a derogatory name but it's just a shortening of the name...."Yank" for Yankee isn't considered in poor taste although I don't personally care for being called such as that term is typically used for Northerners.
I mean there's OTHER derogatory names which sound/seem far worse than "Paki" or "Jap"....I mean at least the Chinese have "Chink" which is NOT short hard for Chinese.
At the end of the day all these names are pretty worthless like any name or derogatory term for someone if you use the stoic approach you understand that all of those terms only have power if you CHOOSE to allow it to hurt you....it's the Roadhouse method Patrick Swayze tells the bouncers how to maintain their cool
