BOXER Erik Skoglund is in a coma after surgery to repair a brain injury suffered in sparring.
The super middle-weight underwent an operation in Sweden after falling ill at the end of a training session yesterday.
Now specialists, who have placed him in a medically induced coma, say the next few days will be vital to see if he recovers from the shocking injury that has left him fighting for his life.
A statement from his promoters Sauerland said: “Erik was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent surgery last night to repair a bleed on the brain.
“Doctors are pleased with the results and Erik remains in a serious yet stable
condition.
“The next 3-4 days are critical for his recovery. During this time, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of Erik and his family.
“We will communicate further information when it becomes available.”
The 26-year-old was part of the World Boxing Super Series which saw the best eight super-middleweights in the globe go into competition with each other.
He lost his quarter-final to highly-rated British star Callum Smith in September, having dropped down a division after campaigning at light-heavyweight.
That was the first defeat of his professional career, which had seen him go into the Smith battle on the back of 26 victories.
But he gave a good account of himself in that fight, and had been due to face another British hope in the shape of Rocky Fielding this month.
The two were due to clash on the undercard of the Tony Bellew return clash with David Haye, only for that title fight to be postponed through injury.
But Skoglung, known to be committed to his conditioning, remained in training despite waiting for his bout with Fielding to be re-scheduled.

Poor guy. Prayers! Who was he sparring against?

Skoglund put on a excellent display against Smith in his loss and last fight.
Hope he recovers.

That is horrible. Just the other day he was putting up Christmas pics of his family. Fingers crossed it was a good thing it occured before the intensity of a fight night.
I was looking forward to his fight with Rocky Fielding. Underrated because he's Scandinavian.

A bit of good news.
Swedish boxer Erik Skoglund has been woken from a medically induced coma and is showing "positive" signs, according to his promoter.
The 26-year-old was placed in a coma earlier in December after having surgery on a bleed on the brain.
He is now "responding to instructions", according to Sauerland Promotions.
"Although he remains in intensive care, the most critical and life threatening stages of his recovery are now behind him," a Sauerland statement read.
"With the swelling to his brain sufficiently reduced, doctors began the process of waking Erik last night and have so far been pleased with the results.
"He has shown a number of positive signs. He is now breathing on his own, with the help of a ventilator, and is responding to instructions.
"Over the coming days, Erik will undergo a series of examinations, which will reveal what affect his injuries will have on his future."
Skoglund was taken to hospital on 8 December after feeling ill following a training session in his hometown of Nykoping.
He had lost his previous fight on points to British super-middleweight Callum Smith on 16 September, the first defeat in his 27-fight career.
Skoglund was set to face Rocky Fielding on the undercard of David Haye's meeting with Tony Bellew on 17 December. However, that fight was postponed after Haye was injured in a training accident.
Days before being taken to hospital, Skoglund tweeted "all I want for Christmas is a fight date". News of his surgery prompted tweets of support from many in the boxing community, including WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves.

Yep, still have to wait and see how severe the lasting effect has on his life but fingers crossed he doesn't get back in the ring.
Did we ever hear any more on Nick Blackwells condition?

I am sure he recovered and chose never to step in the ring again.

Good stuff.
If only those poor funkers from the past had the expertise/knowledge available today...

Was this after the sparring incident? I remember reading that he had woke up and was able to speak...or smile or something but never heard anymore than that.

I think that was before. Not much attention has been paid after he decided to get in the ring for sparring session.
Re: Boxer Erik Skoglund in coma after surgery on brain injury suffered in sparring
it's quite sad actually... I wrote some stuff about him a few years ago on this page that he was an upcoming boxer from Sweden.
I have a lot of hope in him.
