US no boxing power anymore!
Here is an article about the US and its lack of World champion boxers. The US no longer monopolizes Boxings world titles, and it has been moving this direction for a while now. In the US boxing has not attracted the best athletes for quite some time now. I believe that the world has surpassed the US in quality of boxers awhile ago. The US fighters will still get titles, but it is no longer in the heavy divsions (SMW and up).

Re: US no boxing power anymore!
PBF, Winky Wright, Jermain Taylor, Tarver, Hopkins, Corrales, Mosley, Vargas, De la Hoya......excuse me???
The US is at a crossroads but we are by NO means "not a boxing power"

from a british perspective certain elements may be true. however the US still has some of the best facilities and obviously the population of the country makes a big difference so its gotta be only a matter of time. Things are not that bad now actually. I remember a statement from a British boxing writer who said that theres probably a fighter in a US gym sparring whose good enough to win a British title.
Re: US no boxing power anymore!
Yeah it's funny a country than spawned Audley would complain about the US
Re: US no boxing power anymore!
A lot of those fighters mentioned, Lyle, are getting old pretty soon.
Who's gonna replace them? Didn't our sole gold metalist get knocked down already, by someone with more losses than wins?
All United States cares about these days is Football. Then it's basketball and the rest.
Way at the bottom, there is Boxing. The gym at my CITY is a worn torn down storage place. Where if you train hard, you get "high" off of the paint thinner fumes that also kills your brain cells.
Other than that, it's easy to find dojos and karate places. Future for U.S. boxing dominance is at a HUGE question mark right now. But I think your going to agree with me on this?
The future boxers who will represent America, by a large factor, is going to come from the Latino communities in U.S. which are growing. Is that too controversial to say?
Re: US no boxing power anymore!
to say that US is not a boxing power is a foolish thing to say. we have calzaghe, woods and hatton. but the US still is the dominate force in the sport

It is foolish, but as I was saying... the future is bleak for U.S. dominance. But I also say more, but I don't want to repeat myself. ;D

Boxing no longer attracts the athletes that it once did. As far as the quality of boxers in the US it mostly lies in the smaller weights (Middle on down). And all of the boxers that you mentioned are at the smaller weights. Taylor is the only one you mentioned that is still has another 5-10 yrs of potetial ahead of him. The rest have been around awhile, and there is not really a lot of fighters behind them waiting to take their place amoung the world elite.
Re: US no boxing power anymore!
Alrighty fight fans HERE WE GOOOOOO
FYI (* = these aren't sure things but it's guys I like so far)
Heavy: Chambers, Brock, Scott*, Vargas*, Kevin Johnson*, Jason Estrada*, Johnnie White*
168: Lacy, Dawson, Allan Green, Curtis Stevens*
Middle: Taylor, Pavlik, Powell,
Welter: Holt, Paul Williams*, Rock Allen
THE PETERSONS are also very good
US boxing is fine it's just going through a "changing of the guard" if you will whereas the UK had no guard to change

Nice explaination. I do like Vargas, but he is a small heavy. I was suprised he didn't win big at the Olympics, he looked like a million bucks when I watched him.
I'm not worried about U.S. boxers representin', I'm worried about the ship slowly sinking, you get me? But then again, I don't care, because real boxing fans know that this era kicks *ss. And the future looks good too. ;D
My favorite young gun, is Amir Kahn. 8) I hope he can make it big.

Re: US no boxing power anymore!
The U.S. isn't as powerful as it was, but we still have some good fighters. And I'm sure new fighters will arise. Seeing fighters from all over the world become champs, creates more of a world stage, and is good for the sport.
I personally would like boxing to be more popular in the States. But, baseball, football, basketball,{pro and college}, nascar, golf, tennis and other sports get more TV time and exposure.
Damnit, the cable networks need to provide an all boxing network. I mean, come on, there's an all-golf channel!

:coolclick: for the list. Time will tell if this is truly a downturn for US boxers or just a "changing of the guard" as you said.

The US will ALWAYS be a power in boxing. We have to many people and to many facilities for us not to be.
