Can great fighters make great trainers?
So Floyd wants to become a trainer

So can great fighters make great trainers? Or does the very same thing that makes those great fighters stand out among their peers also hold them back as trainers. You can coach so far and then it is down to the fighter to apply that, but i am not sure you can teach those things that make the great stand out from the very good. I know it is nowhere near analogous but in team sports like football (Soccer) it is often the not so great players that end up being outstanding coaches and manaagers. Maybe precisely because they were not blessed with that extra innate bonus, that separates the good from the brilliant.
Re: Can great fighters make great trainers?
So far there have been no ATG fighters that have become great trainers. I don’t think it’s impossible, but it does seem like for most sports, this is the case.
Wrestling is an exception for sure. Most top college programs have Olympic champions.
Re: Can great fighters make great trainers?
Ali wanted SRR to train him, thankfully he did not.
I think they can but if that great fighter puts away his ego and forgets that not everyone could be as great as him.
Re: Can great fighters make great trainers?
I think that Floyd could be a great trainer. My friend that sparred with him told me many times of the way that Floyd would teach him and educate him, about boxing in the ring and the business side as well. His style was very deliberate and well thought out, clearly something that he was taught and then built on.

sometimes, floyd is the last guy i want in my corner
Re: Can great fighters make great trainers?
Great fighters can make great trainers if they're training highly accomplished/talented fighters. There ain't a trainer in history called "great" without the fighter making his name. Trainers can lose dozens and dozens and dozens of times without ever being questioned. (doesn't mean they're not vital)
