Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara: Wembley Arena to host featherweight clash plus Avanesyan vs Kelly fight
Josh Warrington’s fight with Mauricio Lara next month will take place at The SSE Arena, Wembley, promoters Matchroom Boxing have confirmed.
Leeds favourite Warrington faces Mexican Lara on February 13 after British boxing returns from a month-long suspension implemented after a rise in coronavirus cases.
All but two of the 30-year-old’s last 12 bouts have come in his hometown, with ‘The Leeds Warrior’ typically fighting at the First Direct Arena. He also won the IBF featherweight title against Lee Selby at Elland Road in May 2018.
However, Warrington’s successful defence against Carl Frampton in December of that year came in Manchester, while he travelled to Berlin in 2015 to meet Edwin Tellez.
Warrington - who vacated his IBF title last week after the governing body declined to sanction a unification showdown with WBA champion Xu Can - will fight in London for the first time next month after confirmation that The SSE Arena, Wembley will be the venue for his meeting with Lara.
Another win for Warrington should set up a blockbuster fight later in 2021, potentially against long-reigning WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr.
As well as Warrington vs Lara, The SSE Arena, Wembley will also play host to Josh Kelly’s attempts to dethrone European welterweight champion David Avanesyan of Russia seven days later on February 20.
“We’re delighted to welcome Matchroom Boxing back to The SSE Arena, Wembley for our first events of 2021,” said The SSE Arena’s VP and general manager John Drury.
"We’re looking forward to another huge residency, with ASM Global’s VenueShield protocols keeping everyone at our venue safe and comfortable in a welcoming and Covid-secure environment.”

Well done Warrington, make the good fights and the money
Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara
Warrington is one of my favourite Brit fighters. Not a lot of power, but entertaining at the utmost. Will tune in for this...;D
Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara
Kid Galahad and Jazza Dickens are set for an all-British contest for the vacant IBF world featherweight title.
Former champion Josh Warrington gave up the title in January after holding the belt since May 2018.
Galahad, 30, lost to Warrington in 2019 but will have a second shot at a world title against Liverpool's Dickens, 29.
Management company MTK Global announced they had won the rights to stage the fight and said a date and venue would be announced "in due course".
Galahad beat Dickens with a 10th-round stoppage when they fought for the British title at super-bantamweight in 2013.
The Sheffield fighter has just one defeat in 28 outings as a professional, while Dickens has 30 wins and three defeats on his record.

Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara
Good on Warrington tossing the trinket after having the 'nerve' to intend to unify. We know these belt syndicates just can't have that now :-X. Looks like DAZN will be running cards back to back with Joseph Diaz v Rakhimov from the West coast.
Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara
I like Warrington; good all-action fighter. There are a few parallels to be drawn with Hatton. Interesting to see where he goes from here and if he can amass a similar following if the big fights present themselves.
Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara

There are definitely some similarities there though i am not sure he has Hatton's finishing instinct and it will be hard for him to repeat that kind of people pulling power, particularly after Covid.
Good luck to the fella though. He has already surprised many with getting where he has.
Re: Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara
Warrington should get the win by a wide points margin.
Both are lacking in power with low KO% so I'd be surprised if we see a stoppage.

Theres one thing about Warrington, he works hard. He'll keep trying for the stoppage which should make for a good entertaining fight.

No, he certainly doesn't have the stopping power that Hatton had and perhaps his lifestyle outside of the ring seems to be much more controlled, but I find him particularly likeable.
I hope he does well.

It's his volume of punches that fuck the opposition up, when Warringtons on it he throws so many punches.
One of the fittest and most relentless fighters out there.
