The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
Chronology:
1. Modern-day ODLH clone (young, handsome, LA product, Mexican roots) Ryan Garcia gets off to a fast start in his career at lightweight.
2. Media, starved for another DLH, laps it up. Ryan enhances the image calling himself "King", wearing a crown, and amassing almost 10 million followers on Instagram and 5 more on Tik Tok.
3. He gets a win over legitimate opponent Luke Campbell in 2021... and it's "off to the races."
4. He clamors (demands) a showdown with Gervonta Davis, and has the UNMITIGATED GALL to state that whoever wins this will become "the (cough) face of boxing." HOW SO?? No one knows.
5. He gets schooled... then knocked out by Davis. (His Instagram following didn't even blink).
Meanwhile...
1. Ryan says he's moving up to 140. (This gets the wheels turning in the boxing establishment).
2. The WBA declares 140-champ Alberto Puello "champion-in-recess" (whatever the hell that means) due to a failed PED test.
3. The WBA rules that 40-year old Venezuelan fighter Ismael Barroso (WBA mandatory) will face 5th-ranked Rolando Romero for the now vacated title.
4. Granted... the WBA also said the winner of that fight would need to face British fighter Ohara Davies next.
But...
1. Ryan is looking to move up to 140.
2. He's gonna want to slingshot to the top, because that's how it's done nowadays, especially with young, handsome, social media phenoms.
3. He's gonna find that three of the champions of the division are:
- Josh Taylor (WBO) - Assuming he gets by Teófimo on June 10th
- Regis Prograis (WBC)
- Subriel Matias (IBF)
Now... you all get one guess as to where Ryan will set his sights.
Exactly.
My guess is, either "A": Ryan waits patiently and quietly until Romero-Davies gets sorted out.
Or "B": The powers that be decide that Ryan vs Romero is what the public (cough) wants now... and that THAT is the next PPV mega attraction, and whoever wins will THEN be the new face of boxing.
Either way, Ryan's path to a shiny new trinket to go with his shiny crown will be paved and smoothed out, in order to ensure the least bit of turbulence along the way.
Any other theories?
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
Ryan Garcia is big with the young social media followers even my son has heard of him. He can see that Garcia is a gimmick and is not a real world class fighter yet, although better than the you tubers that are around today.
Taylor and Prograis would beat him and take the huge payday. Hope they get it but think Ryan avoids them.

Your son is already a knowledgeable boxing fan. Most Ryan groupies don't see that he's a gimmick. Yes... Ryan's better than the YouTubers... but then again, that's not saying much.
Don't forget Matias. Matias murders Ryan. Ryan will avoid him also. That leaves the WBA and Rolly.
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
We're dinosaurs, Chaps... The new face of the sport is that of the casual fans. They vaulted jake paul, ryan garcia and the like to prominence in a vacuum void of substance. Legitimate fighters exist in a shroud of secrecy because the youngest generation doesn't really comprehend the logic behind toiling away in a dungeon void of cameras and wifi signals to become a gladiator. They are for the fanfare and the spectacle... not the science, the reckoning of the battle, and the code. Ask these people who the Marquis of Queensberry and they'd probably guess its a drag queen that performed at the VMAs. To them Mayweather is TBE, not because of what he did in the ring.. but what he did out of the ring... he marketed himself to them by playing the villain rather than just fighting and let the fans, the media and the historians decide. So we're at the part where everyone is doing that now. Social media insults, good looks, who rapped on their ring walk, who their baby mama is, and all other things determine how watchable they are to the casuals and ultimately how profitable they are. That's the casuals "bread and circus".
The best fighters of our generations and before are ghosts that exist on youtube and their names are buzzwords to be brought up in casual conversations in order to participate. They don't understand what made them special. Mike Tyson maintains his popularity by being a marijuana enthusiast. With his face tattoo hes probably the most normal guy in the room now. Unless you're lucky enough to glean that valuable information from a knowledgeable parent such as Master, the youth are in a state of decay. They often don't recognize things that are unequivocal or majestic, right in front of them. It's sad that we used to worry about the fate of the world, when we placed it in the hands of our children. We don't even have a choice anymore. Everything we held dear is being stripped away and bastardized one by one (look at all the shitty movie remakes and looping samples from our generations music over awful trap beats and the like...) by the consensus of half brained kids that run around tapping their phones on everything and can't put on a clip on tie without help.
So its not surprising to me to watch Ryan Garcia following the De la Hoya blueprint to a Tee. Including firing his trainer after a loss. Blame the trainer, lose the trainer and somehow according to your ego and legion of loyal social media followers... your image is still pristine, even if your voice hasnt changed yet and you sound like mickey mouse.

This is the best damn post I've seen in quite a while. :appl:
Whew! It's refreshing to hear other voices say these things. You put it very well, sir. (Also, you made me laugh out loud at your Marquis of Queensberry reference). ;D
Which is why I rooted so hard for Gervonta in this last fight. I don't like that Gervonta is allegedly a woman beater. But for the sake of boxing (the way I remember and fell in love with it)... I had no choice but to root against Ryan.
Like any ugly truth, much of what you said is stuff most of us older, hardcore fans don't want to hear. But it's the truth nonetheless.
Sad.
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ

Rolly didn't do anything, as far as I'm concerned.
Well... that's not entirely true.
In his previous fight he got KTFO'ed by Gervonta at 135.
As a reward, he IMMEDIATELY gets to leapfrog higher ranked fighters for a shot at the 140 belt.
To put the cherry on the ice cream, he gets gifted a ridiculous stoppage in a fight he was clearly losing.
Business as usual in boxing.
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
@J_Undisputed that is an absolute gem. Very well put!
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
I am pretty sure that his new trainer is going to be Derrick James. I am pretty sure that he is going to be 'required' to thin his 'circle' (too many clowns in that car).
I think that everybody understands that the farce last weekend was to set up a fight at 140 with Romero.

Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
The Ryan Garcia vs Oscar De La Hoya feud is still going, but now both men have got lawyers involved.
A week ago, Garcia's legal team sent a letter to De La Hoya's Golden Boy promotions claiming there had been violations of their contract which invalidates their promotional agreement.
As such, Golden Boy have responded by filing a lawsuit against Garcia and his attorney and advisor, Guadalupe Valencia, to enforce their contract.
In a statement provided to ESPN, Golden Boy said: "Golden Boy has been proud to have worked with Ryan Garcia for the last several years and to help catapult him to the kind of stardom that led to the biggest boxing Pay Per View event in years just two months ago.
"With this filing, we are seeking to ensure that Ryan and his team will honor the remainder of his contract, a contract that Ryan himself called 'one of the most lucrative boxing deals for a prospect in the history of the sport.'
"Since then, Ryan has moved on to becoming a legitimate contender, and we will continue to present Ryan with the best possible opponents that can eventually lead the way to a world championship and a historic legacy."
This was all prompted as Garcia believes he was abandoned by his team after his loss against Gervonta Davis, due to De La Hoya and other members of Golden Boy Promotions not attending the post-fight press conference.
De La Hoya responded to Garcia's comments on Twitter, saying: "Wtf @RyanGarcia it’s been almost two months and you're still crying about the post presser? The blame for your loss is on YOU and your 'advisor' Lupe. He is the only one who pushed you to accept that INSANE rehydration clause and THAT is the reason you lost. Man up. Own that."
Talk of a re-hydration clause is in reference to the fact that the fight was at a catchweight of 136 lbs, but neither fighter could weigh more than 146 lbs on fight night.
And this prompted Garcia's lawyer Bo Pearl of Paul Hastings to tell ESPN: "Golden Boy is obligated to promote and enhance Ryan Garcia, not malign him on Twitter and file a public, baseless lawsuit against him.
"Ironically, the lawsuit itself constitutes a breach of the very agreement Golden Boy is seeking to enforce. It is obvious retaliation to a letter detailing multiple asserted breaches of contract by Golden Boy."
"Rather than address these serious issues in mediation (as is required under the contract), Golden Boy rushed to court to sue its fighter. To be sure, we will respond to this gamesmanship and fully enforce all of Ryan's contractual rights against Golden Boy as well as his rights under state and federal law."

Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
Fishnets against PauperRy. :D
I think they should kiss and make up... telling each other how handsome they are, and posing for selfies.
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
oscar lost canelo & now he's going to lose king ry
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
They can just freeze up his contract until expired right? Oscar is one of the reason old old heads like King see reason to concede the floor.
Re: The Quest to Make Ryan Garcia Champ
Nobody wants to freeze Ryan out; he is worth too much money. His mother did a very shrewd thing, in the way she marketed him. He had a very solid amateur career and so did Gervonta Davis; Davis does 200,000 ppvs until he fights Ryan...then 1.2 million. Davis didn't suddenly grow a fanbase. Garcia's mother built that. She tried the same thing for her younger son Sean, er, "SugarRush" Sean. But he doesn't have much heart for a fight which is good because he isn't too good at it.
Write this down and circle it...when he fights Romero, it is going to do in the 750,000 range in ppv sales. If Ryan wins, he will be back in the million sales range. They will pick his opposition very carefully and he will keep winning and selling.
Nothing has changed. Boxing has always been run that way, in terms of building a guy that can sell that may not be the best fighter. His mother was ahead of the curve in the way in which she promoted her son.
There were 2mistakes made. First, he stayed with his father as trainer for too long. Second, by the time the move was made, he was too big headed to listen. If he learned humility from the loss, that last can be remedied; he is young and gifted and can still become a good fighter. He probably won't, though.
