Different gloves not fair!
April 13, 2006
By Joe Koizumi
Apart from a controversy on the verdict of the Floyd Mayweather-Zab Judah IBF welterweight title bout last Saturday, there was another serious problem therein. Yours truly served as commentator of the fight telecast live to Japan from Las Vegas. Problem was in their gloves. Mayweather used Winning gloves of Japan, while Judah Everlast of the US. At everyones’ glance, the sizes of their gloves were quite different. Mayweather’s white gloves looked much bigger than those of Judah’s black gloves. The general impression didn’t come from the difference of the color but from the shape and structure of their gloves. Should a boxer wish to defend himself from his opponent’s hard punches, larger-shaped gloves might be effective. On the contrary, should a hard puncher hope to punish his opponent and deliver more damage, smaller-shaped gloves might be effective.
It might be a bad rule that boxers can select gloves of any brand they like. It seemed an exaggerated freedom that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) allowed Mayweather and Judah, or previously Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao in their rematch, to use any gloves they select provided that the weight of gloves should be same (8 ounce for a glove). That’s not fair. The fight should be competed fair and square, definitely with the same conditions for both boxers, with the gloves of the same brand; Everlast, Grant, Reyes, Winning, or whatever. Otherwise, boxing will become an unfair sport.
Lately, in Japan, there was a dispute on gloves at the rules meeting prior to the WBC bantamweight title bout in Kobe on March 25. We had a customary ceremony where both parties, champion Hozumi Hasegawa and challenger and ex-champ Veeraphol Nakhonluang-Promotion, were supposed to select the gloves to be used for their rematch. The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) prepared red gloves for the champ and blue gloves for the challenger for the sake of clarifying the boxers on the TV screen. Veeraphol’s manager Suchart Pisitwuttinan from Thailand, however, very strongly insisted that gloves in same color should be used for the bout, and the JBC finally had to accept his proposal under the name of fair play. When a lady wears red suits or blue suits, our impression on her slimness may differ. Like that, even if only the colors of the gloves of the same brand for the champ and the challenger were different, such an insistence of Suchart logically stood.
The NSAC is a leading commission in the world, and should show a good example to all over the world. Modernization isn’t necessarily improvement. Given too much freedom, the game of boxing may deteriorate against the fairness. It is really hoped that the Mayweather-Judah bout was the very last ever that each boxer was rendered an undesirable and unnecessary right to select the gloves of ANY BRAND.

oh well if only Floyd was made smaller gloves... Zab would of won...
yeh right... :P
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
This writer is stupid. Bigger gloves are also a disadvantage offensively... its easier to block them, and they make your punches slower because of more air resistance which is actually noticable. I can punch faster with 16 or even 18 oz gloves that are compact than I can with 10oz gloves that are sparring gloves. It should be the boxers perogative what they wear if it weighs the same. IMO glove difference is fair just like shoe difference, mouthguards, protectors, cups, and the like are all different, and its fair though they vary.

If Floyd was the only fighter allowed to wear those gloves, then it'd be unfair.
But Zab could've wore 'em too if he feels they'd give him an advantage.
Now if Zab knocked Floyd out, the argument would be, "It's not fair, Zab's gloves were more compact!"
Both gloves have their ups and downs.
I swear if Floyd's gloves were black there wouldnt even be a discussion right now.
The white gloves look 100 times bigger than black gloves on tv.
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
the guy isnt saying just floyd, he is saying there should be NO difference between the gloves, be they big or small
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
He could say all he wants, but if both fighters agree to different gloves, I'm not gonna argue the actual combatants.
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
This story isn't "an article about mayweather's gloves." it's an article about how each fighter wore the gloves he preferred, and how each set of gloves have different advantages and disadvantages. while the writer thinks this is "an exaggerated freedom," and states without argument that it's "not fair," he doesn't say that in this particular instance it was judah who got the short end of the fairness stick (which is part of why his "not fair" statement is stupid--it's directly contradicted the freedom that he tirades against).
The only conclusion (if it can be called that, given his lack of reasoning or persuasiveness in getting there) is that all boxers should wear the same brand of glove. Consistent with that "conclusion" is the statement "both judah and mayweather should have worn white winning-brand gloves, and neither should have worn black everlast-brand gloves."
it IS hilarious though that some one purporting to be a journalist actually wrote an article on this subject, now that sal's championing of the issue has become a running joke here.
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
i understand that, however the article was inspired by the difference in gloves, which exisited because mayweather wore winnings....
which is why the article is indirectley about mayweather gloves ;)

the difference in gloves existed equally because judah wore everlast.
Re: WOW!! AN ACTUAL ARTICLE ABOUT MAYWEATHERS GLOVES!!!
yes, but mayweathers gloves are just as guilty ;)
You're attacking Mayweather at every angle dude...
Mayweather would still have won had he worn differently shaped gloves... that's SHAPED[/size] gloves dude. If he was able to produce a fist to punch and the gloves were the same weight, it would not have made enough of a difference. Zab got his ass beat and that's all there is to it Silly Sal the Butcher of Logic and Reality. NO controversy.
Fightnews, (that article) for some reason has it in for Mayweather. Maybe it's because all his interviews and what not are going to Boxingtalk? Don't know, but they've been totally biased since all the hype started.

and thus just as innocent. so we're settled then: there was as little problem with floyd wearing his chosen gloves as there was with zab wearing his.
i guess we can drop it now. ^-^

They are the same weight thats all that matters, and if you've boxed enough one person wearing big gloves, and one person wearing small gloves cancel eachother out... You never complained about Winky using larger gloves so why are you complaining now?

Mayweather wore them so he wouldn't hurt his hands... I think that is reasonable. It makes his punches less sharp and quick, and if you know what your doing you can get around them, and with slender gloves like Judah had you can slip through the cracks, and he did so how is Mayweather guilty? You can say Zab is guilty for not wearing the same gloves.
