Best nickname in Boxing History
There have been some great nicknames for fighters over the years, some will disagree but here is my top 5.
5. James BONE CRUSHER Smith
4. Tommy HITMAN Hearns
3. Bernard EXECUTIONER Hopkins
2. James LIGHTS OUT Toney
But the best of all time has to be the BABY FACE ASSASSIN, Marco Barrera
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
I think MAB and Floyd Mayweather have the most ironic nicknames of all... Baby faced isn't supposed to be fugly and Pretty boy should be, well pretty

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Good Post - Yeah, there are some superb ones:
- 'Manos de Piedra' (Hands of stone) That is my favourite, great nickname.
- Iran 'The Blade' Barkley - he's better be careful as Bush may invade him.
- Charles 'The Hatchet' Brewer
- The Manassa Mauler
- 'Iron' Mike
- Mike 'the Bodysnatcher' McCallum
There are some shit ones too, though:
- I always thought that Michael 'Second to' Nunn was a relay 'trying too hard' name that never worked.

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
I knew an amateur fighter who used the nickname "The Orgasmic Seagull" to try to get dates.

Can't quite say that is the best nickname I have heard (Perhaps the strangest) but LuciferThe Great is by far the best nickname on this forum.

Hearns did not like it though, he preferred 'The Motor City Cobra'.
Some of my favourites:
Marvelous Marvin Hagler
'Smokin' Joe Frazier
'Brockton Blockbuster' Rocky Marciano
'The Bayonne Bleeder' Chuck Wepner
Herol 'Bomber' Graham
Donavon 'Razor' Ruddock
'Homicide Hank' (Henry) Armstrong
But you struggle to beat a Zimbabwean Heavyweight in this department:
'Hitler The Killer'

'Jukebox Timebomb'

'Captain Cleopas Marvel'

To name three... ;)

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Do a search on www.saddoboxing.com/records for Ricky Hatton.
There will be 3 boxers listed, and the chap under Ricky needs no nickname ;D

LOL yes it is. Call me Jody if you want to. Jody Lane = LuciferTheGreat. Heck I am so open about who I am that a site I run at MSN groups devoted to PBS educational tv called "The Electric Company Fan Club 2" has my home number listed on it.

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
I like Ike 'Bazooka' Quartey
And 'Lucky' for Johnny Tapia - love the irony in that one
Davaryl 'Touch of sleep' Willaimson - has to be the worst ;D
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
we used to have guy's like Smoking Joe and 'the real deal' Holyfeild...
Until Big foot got rid of him we were stuck with 'the quiet man' what the fuck is that? thats weak :P
John "modest man" Ruiz
John "nice chap" Ruiz
John "humble pie" Ruiz

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
I must admit that Pernell Whitaker is my favorite of all time but the nickname sweet pea was lackluster. Golden Boy has to be the most fruity nickname in history. He sounds like a gay super hero.
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Luv the doctors--- Dr. Steel Hammer and Dr. Iron Fist

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
"Marvellous" Marvin Hagler
"Hands of Stone"
"Iron" Mike Tyson
"The Real Deal" Holyfield

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Terrible tim (witherspoon), terrible terry (norris)
the mannasau mauler (jack dempsey)
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
"Lights Out" is proably the most intimidating name of all of them.
Hitman Hearn is the most recognizable of them. If you tell the casual sports fan that you saw "The Hitman", they would automatically think of Tommy Hearns, unless they are into pro wrestling.
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Ike "Bazooka" Quartey
Roger "The Black Mamba" Mayweather
Are two of my favorites
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Larry "The Legend" Donald. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!???????????

"sweet" pea on the streets back in the old days meant "PUNK"..Punk means your the catcher in a gay relationship..like i said it was back in the old days.....don't think that would be a very good nickname....

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
"The Boston Strong Boy" John L. Sullivan! Champion now and forever!!!

'Terrible' Terry McGovern beat both by 80+ years ;)

Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
The Body Snatcher.
Tommy Hearns gave it to him when they sparred, by the way.
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
The Ugandan Destroyer was always a favourite of mine.
"El Terrible" is another good one.
Most over used of all time has to go to "Sugar"
I always judge them by how good they sound when the ring announcer rumbles em off. Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield was awesome in this respect.
-
Re: Best nickname in Boxing History
Whilst he was unbeaten; Michael 'Second to' Nunn
Willie 'The Worm' Monroe
Eugene 'Cyclone' Hart
Bobby 'Boogaloo' Watts
Robert 'Bam Bam' Hines
Iran 'The Blade' Barkley
Another one I liked; Chris 'P' Bacon ;)

Got kind of a gay hate deal there Ragu? Why bring it up unless you are insinuating something. The fact was he was a fine boxer and if he was gay I would still be proud to shake his hand and call him champ today.
