What's the deal with tipping in the US?
As y'all know I'm off to the states in a few weeks (NY, Vegas and Florida) and I'm somewhat concerned that I'm gonna get rinsed by the doormen, bellhops, concierges, taxi drivers that expect a tip.
Posters doing gags about 'not eating yellow snow' will be dealt with using extreme prejudice.
That is all.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Yes.
Those people all expect a tip.
Best bet is to really turn up the intensity of your accent & play ignorant to the tradition.
If the heat is on & you sence hostility, reply "No speeky Eenglese" fart in the cab, then run like hell.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
;D
'I say, that's awfully nice of you barkeep. Here have 10 shillings for your trouble' :toff:
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Well only tip people that did their jobs well or people you expect to see again (door men etc)....also I know in smaller cities the cabbies can be haggled with especially if you use them more than once
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
I've heard that all these guys are on minimum wage and tipping is compulsary :headscratch:
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
i went to new york a few years ago and tipped. its compulsory I believe unless you want someone to piss in your coffee
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Compulsary tipping.................. Wow
Next thing you know you'll be forced to buy every homeless person you see a coffee!

...I believe they prefer malt liquor or crack....just an FYI
Damned Yankees and their cumpulsary tipping! In the South we have something called HOSPITALITY, you can tip if you like and we appreciate it. If you don't we won't be as nice but still better than yankees
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
...don't judge the whole south based just on Florida...they have been invaded!

I lived in good ole Georgia for over a year the only hospitality shown was on Sunday and the first half of monday...it is just as rude as anywhere in the United States...and for the record It's not "yankees", that is a baseball team in NY....it's Northerners (north), Midwesterners(midwest), Easterners(east coast), Westerners (west coast) and Southerners (losers)....:) yankees was an insult given to Americans by the English.....only idiots/ignorant embrace such a term as "yankees"...standard tip in the US is as follows...double the first number in the bill....10 dollars=2 dollar tip.....watch out for cabbies....they can have the meter running before you get in the vehicle....they also take you the LONG way sometimes as well......Southerners don't tip because they are cheap bastards.....that and low wages....

Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Good stuff 8)
So what's Brad then...I've not a clue where the_ohio is :magnify:
How many electoral college votes do they have?
Why do the Wolverines kick Ohio States ass season after season?
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Cause they have pretty yellow uniforms
Wait, why would anyone watch college sports? :D
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Actually I'm watching a programme on Channel 4 as we speak called 'Gods own Army'. It's about homeschooled kids from the midwest 'Baberton and 'Akrin' ('scuse the spellings B) - Ohio.
There parents are sending them to Patrick Henry College.
It's a bit weird as these kids are being groomed specifically to influence the future political agenda...

So they're being groomed to be more full of shit than our current politicians? ;D
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
On a serious note thats kinda scary, abunch of kids with the idea that they know the way and everyone else is full of shit embeded into their head. I mean hows someone whos been guarded safely away from all the problems gonna know how to fix em? :-\
Who knows may be a good thing, they might even spawn a few Slick Willys! Not enough politicians know how to utilize a cigar nowdays...
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Dunno...just looks like a load of god squad with dandruff and bad sweaters :magnify:
The side parting is also in attendance :cwm13:
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Actually some of the birds on this program have a kinda 'wholesome' thing going on :hubbahubba:
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Y'know, American culture absolutely fascinates me.
It just seems like a place of real extremes...like there's no place for middle ground.
You're either 'anti' or 'pro' and thats it.
The UK political parties dominate the centreground but it seems like compromise is political suicide in the US.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Yeah it's a big problem here, some people don't get the idea of being liberal about somethings and conservative about others. It's all or none, like James Toney with food. Makes it worse with celebs and athletes running their mouth with impressionable kids focused in on it.
Although I always assumed the UK and everywhere else was just as if not worse about being confrentational. What happends when you're too poor to leave the country and see what other places have to offer :(
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
We're not as culturally diverse as you guys and we don't have pressure groups anywhere near as powerful. We also don't have a constitution...more a set of conventions.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
steelie dont listen to dem yankees or southerners.
we out in the west coast do it this way
at a restaurant give them 15% of the bill
doormen, a dollar or two maybe two if they don't do shiot dont give them anything.
Cabbies. we dont have much cabs here out west but when we were in NYC, I usually gave them two or three bucks. some people say 10% is proper.
when you leave your hotel, leave a little something for the cleaning lady
but don't go tipping everybody. Just the services folks
in Mexico it is out of hand. Everybody wanted a tip. This dude would sit by the sidewalk and people were parking their cars he would give directions with hand signals kind of guiding them in you know...the dumb arse white people and black people were tipping this guy, but me being the savvy super mexican basically told him to go fly a kite. I could park my own car.
another one would say I will watch the car for you and expect a tip, The nerve of that guy. I never paid it of course. I would smile at him when I came back to the car but that was that. One time I told him to look both ways before he crossed the street. That is a good tip dont cha think? That took care of that.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
save Canadian coins!!!!!
this is what I would tip car guiding parking guy!

things take time....eventually the people here will get tired of the big oil and fat cats polititions and take the government back soon...that or I'm moving to New Zealand....:)
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
You would probably use a lot of oil getting to New Zealand...unless you want to go via rowboat you granola eatin sissyfied yankee.
Really these extremes in politics have been born from ages ago....Reagan's economic policy hurt lower class people, GHW Bush "read my lips no new taxes", Clinton was a smug son of a bitch and a liar, W is an idiot who never listens to anything negative...I mean sometimes you have to...you know like an intervention you don't WANT to listen but you NEED to listen, it helps you figure out what is a problem and why it's a problem.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
...oh and Jimmy Carter was a pussy
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
have any of yall every worked for tips? As a one time bartender I assure you that almost my entire wage depended on the generosity of others...most waitstaff/bartenders make 2-3 dollars an hour at most..that means after an 8 hour shift the have made only 16-24 dollars. 15% for wait staff should be a starting point, and I tip 0.50-1.00 per drink. We don't have cabbies where I'm from.
-
Re: What's the deal with tipping in the US?
Yes, living off of tips sucks

this coming from a redneck retard stuck in the stone age...that still thinks the Souths going to win....go back to eating the fried okra and oreos and burning crosses, leave the conversations for the educated adults....Reagan, GHW Bush and W have cowtowed to the Rich in every which way....with tax relief and deductions...Clinton cut our military by 66% and W pick up where his daddy left off "Iraq" the Bush family is in with saudi arabia(a country know to support terrorists) and the biggest supporter of cronieism the US Presidency has ever seen, ignored warnings about Katrina..more concerned over gay marriage than the environment. unfortunately so is most of hypocritical america which is why he won the last election.....honestly thinks he talks to god every day....Clinton did more for us than the past 16+ years of republican ruling...Jimmy Carter had republican houses in both the senate and the HOR...Carter never stood a chance....Republicans spend the money the Democrats put back into the country...and brag about how well the economy is...

Fried okra is good, but what's the deal with oreos, you lost me there.
I gave reasons people have for not liking all of those presidents...I didn't play favorites, if you read the post clearly enough you'll see that.
Democrats are usually the big spenders and big taxers, Republicans are usually (up until GW fucked up the system) the "fiscal conservatives" which is why Republicans and Conservatives are interchangeable kind of like Democrat and Liberal.
I agree Katrina was a cluster fuck...but it wasn't ONLY Bush's fault, at some point someone in Louisiana or New Orleans had to take the ball and run with it with or without federal help. Those people living their had their warnings and if they couldn't get out they don't give a fuck who's fault it is they just want to live to see tomorrow so people should have stopped fighting over who's to blame and just helped them out.
Carter is one guy I'm not fond of. He's the Jane Fonda of Presidents, you find someone who doesn't like America and he'll meet with them and take their side. Carter acted like a damn fool at Corretta Scott King's funeral (yeah I watched it, so much for being such a bigot huh). As for what he did in office...oil shortage, hostages in Iran, he was just a wimp, he never stood up to any of these threats.

As a Southerner in the 21st Century I have nothing to do with hating any kind of people unless they deliberitly offend me and if that's the case
I DEMAND SATISFACTION!
