Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I have always felt Morrison was underated in his prime.
He was unlucky to be boxing in the second best decade of HWs,the 90's.
Looking at The Rings now out of date top 10 HW of today,I think Morrison would stand a great chance against any of them apart from Sam Peters who might be to strong for the Duke.
1-Klitschko
2-Rahman
3-Toney
4-Liakhovich
5-Brewster
6-Ruiz
7-Byrd
8-Brock
9-Peter
10-Valuev
What a motly crew. :(

aside from Wlad Tommy would be the most dominant HW today if that was the case. He had tremendous skills and only lost them to his moviestar lifestyle.

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
Well he had a great left hook that was able to KO a faded Razor Ruddock.A very good KO by the way.
Beat Joe Hip while boxing with a broken jaw.
He was also able to out box big George over 12 rounds.
But..............he got badly KOd by Ray Mercer,Lewis and Michel Bentt.
In short when his mind was on the job he was very good, but when it wasent he was bad.
He was a kill or be killed type of boxer.

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
Brewster, Wlad, Peter and Valuev might of caused trouble for him. Brewster would of brawled so maybe would of got knocked out but remember tommy didnt have the best chin and brewsters left hook could do some damage, Wlads right hand would of koed tommy...but tommys left hook was not something to be messed with so if he landed it clean it could of been a problem, Peter would brawl and maybe have too much power and Valuev...plain too big.

His win over Ruddock was a great KO when you think that Tyson could not stop him even thought Ruddocd was a faded fighter.
His win over Foreman supprised a lot of fans as well.
But if you want to watch the most brutal KO ever you got to watch his loss to Ray Mercer.

for guts and all I would say the Hip fight. He had a broken jaw and hand in that one and still pulled it out. for a straight up beating I would say the Tillis fight. It was "Quick", pardon the pun :)

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I think Tommy would easily be a champion if hadnt left. Any fight with him vs Wlad/Peter/Brewster/Rahman would be a 50/50 fight. All could easily hurt him and he could easily hurt them. With the way the heavies a matched in their fights today he would only face one of the them once every two years or so.
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I think there is no question he would be a champ...but I don't think he would be THE champ
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I actaully think Tommy Morrison would take out any of the current Heavies.

His chin was pretty good. His ko loss to Mercer was conditioning. He punched himself out and was exhausted. Couldn't defend himself and then got caught in the ropes when he was out. Plus the ref was sleeping on the job. That wouldn't have went down as such a brutal ko if he didn't get caught with several after he was already out. It obviously should have been stopped before several of those punches landed.

think Byrd would beat him.
But I would have loved to see the Brewster and Peter fights

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I think Tommy would fit in quite nicely with todays crop. He biffed his way to a title back then so I dont see why he couldnt do it now. He'd be an American hero, think of all the pussy he would get....................or not ;D
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
i hope he dont come back because if he gets cut they would have to stop the fight so other boxer dont get hes infection

It's quite possible that all the panooch that he got is what put him in the spot he's in today...think about that. ;D
Anywho, if a prime Morrison burst onto the scene right now & made his way up the ladder...I think that he'd breeze through everyone...especially Sam Peter.
Morrison had one thing throughout his reign (so to speak) & that was confidence. Even after his losses...he was still ready to go to the next man. I honestly believe that throwing him in with Lewis was like throwing him to the wolves...but that's just me.
I liked him as a heavyweight hopeful. He was explosive & he was fun to watch. It'd be nice to have someone like him out there today...but Wlad would probably stop him too.

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I really liked Morrisson as a fighter, always entairtaining.
fantastic left hook, good power, good stamina, okay footwork, akay combo, bad bad bad chin. exactly what it takes to make it exiting :D
here's how I see it (taking each persons at their best)
1-Klitschko - Morrisson by a fantastic 4 round KO thanks toi his left hook after being dominated during the first 3 rounds. 10 months later Wlad would win a exiting 12 rounds decision thanks to a better guard and his jab.
2-Rahman - Morrisson by TKO in 10
3-Toney - Toney by UD (accepting the fact that Toney would come at 210-215)
4-Liakhovich - SD for Morrisson after being rocked and counted twice in the last round
5-Brewster - Brewster by ko, I can't see tommy taking brewster punches..but still 50/50 bout
6-Ruiz - Morrisson by a 18 secondes KO, beating the record of Tua, and the ncalling out Tua ^^
7-Byrd^- Byrd by UD, no way Morrisson could outbox him.
8-Brock - Draw ^^
9-Peter - Peter by Ko, this is Morrisson Nemesis, a fighter who can hit you with 2 hands of stones, hurting you at each punch.
10-Valuev : interesting, but for being able to see the Valuev rocked by Nobles....let's say that Tommy would ko the mountain :-)

Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
toney isnt ever going get back in shape so id go with tommy by easy ud

What a motly crew. :(
The best today: Klitschko, Valuev, Peter, Brewster, Liakovich. A prime Tommy Moorison would stand a very good chance against James Toney, but would have to knock him out to win.

that's my point, I mean Toney is so hard to KO. I don't remember him being KO in a bout though.
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I think Tommy Morrison would have knocked out Toney, But thats just my opinion. Toney likes to lean to his right alot, And that would invite a Morrison left hook.... Peter will knock out Toney in Sept. Long live the Duke!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
The earlier version of Morrison before he started thinking he was Hollywood Tommy Was as dangerous as they come for the first 6rds.....He would have more trouble with the boxers of todays divisionlike Brock or Byrd...I think anyone else he could hang there with for the first half of the fight no problem until he ran out of gas like the mercer fight...
-
Re: Would a prime Tommy Morrison be champion if he was boxing now?
I say no... heavywieghts are vastly underrated right now.

I like a prime Morrison's chance against the Ruiz's and the Maskive's ,and Rahman's . but Sam Peter would "Ray Mercer him " if you will. as would David Tua,
