Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Punch statistics
Total thrown (Hopkins/Calzaghe): 468/707
Total landed: 127/232
Percentage landed: 27/33
Jabs thrown: 93/224
Jabs landed: 11/45
Percentage landed: 12/20
Power punches thrown: 375/483
Power punches landed: 116/187
Percentage landed: 31/39
And no, one good punch doesnt make up for the difference..nor does throwing a couple of clean punches every round..
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Calzaghe outworked Hopkins and won a close fight. I though Calzaghe edged it, but Hopkins landed by far the harder, cleaner punches. He just didn't land enough of them.

Precisely. I think the difference was after the 3rd rounds jc put his left up more and timed hopkins movement much better...add to that the fact that granpa was tiring..
Also he started to punch more...

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Those punch stats don't tell the whole story the first 4 rounds Hopkins won IMO and maybe Calzaghe did land few more punches in some rounds but Hopkins still landed more effective blows of the rounds he won, just say for instance in the rounds Calzaghe won he landed 20 more punches than Hopkins in those rounds, but in the rounds he lost he landed a few more punches than Hopkins, but Hopkins landed the much more effective blows ?? punch stats can be misleading and they are in this case as well.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
add in that one is pressing the fight, one is tieing it up, even those punch stats being completely equal, you have that it Joe's favour also..
Hopkins did land some very good punches though.. By far he had at least the 10 nicest punches of the fight.

Hopkins had the best punch of the night, the knock down.
BUT FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!! DID YOU PEOPLE NOT SEE THE HOOK THAT CAME IN AND ROCKED BHOP IN EITHER THE 10TH OR 11TH WHERE HE HAD TO CLINCH TO SURVIVE???
WAS I WATCHING A DIFFERENT FIGHT?
It sickens me this whole 'calzaghe didnt throw good punches' comments... LOOK AT ROUNDS 10 AND 11...HOPKINS WAS ROCKED!!! HOW CAN YOU SAY THEY WERENT GOOD PUNCHES THAT DIDNT DAMAGE HOPKINS?
Its like it has to be spelled out over and over again, just look at those rounds please!

no, you were not...it's just that some people choose to close their eyes when their favourite fighter gets hit...the guy gave 6 rounds to hopkins I mean 6! where and how did he get these 6 rounds I have no idea..

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
compubox stats are unrealible

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Giving 6 rounds to Hopkins is warped....
Ultimately it was closer than I thought it would be. Ive just finished rewatching it on video. No doubts that Joe did more than enough. It was his superior workrate that did seperate them.
Joe just didnt do very much in the first 3 rounds. Therafter it was Joe all the way.

Which is pretty much as I saw it too, and at the end of the day, you can have what stats you like brought up,
But they mean nothing, this does tho,
FACT: JOE WON, AND HE WAS RIGHTLY DECLARED THE WINNER AFTER THE SCORE CARDS HAD BEEN HANDED IN AND COUNTED UP,
AND THAT WAS DONE IN FLOPKINS BACKYARD TOO ....
Get over it, or live with it, but learn to accept it because it's happened, it's gone and now a part of Boxing history..

Ice is right, anybody that knows boxing knows punch stats don't mean much and are misleading. Plus anybody that goes by it to base who won a fight is lame.

Tried to rep you but was told to "spread the rep". I will catch up later.
I did want Joe to stop Hopkins so we wouldnt have had any room for the whingers and excuse makers. But it wasnt to be. As it is Calzaghe continues to be unbeaten and marches on. As that final bell sounded part of me wished that we still had 15 rounders because Joe looked fresh as a daisy and could have gone on indefinately.
Anyway, he won by 4 points by my reckoning. Not even that close. Now bring on Jones Jr. Personally im not really into the Jones Jr fight because I think he is way over the hill but if thats what Joe wants then who can begrudge him a payday at 36?
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
ugly fight, fair play to JC he deserved the decision. Cortez should have done something about Hopkins holding early on, could have made it a much better fight,
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Punchstat numbers are misleading, everyone should know that by now. Two or three slapping, unclean punches do not equal one flush straight right hand up the pipe. This isn't the amateurs, professional fights are judges on CLEAN, EFFECTIVE punching. And in that catagory, Hopkins was the victor.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Nobody has ever landed that many punches on Hopkins and that includes a prime roy Jones back in the day when Hopkins was easier to hit .
Says alot . Joe won comfortably

To be fair though, Jones never threw anywhere near 700 punches in that stinker. Both guys fought cautiously, Jones wouldn't even commit to a jab.

Agreed Winky was a volume puncher though and he never had teh sucess Joe did . Hop seemed to get tired and Joe began turning on the class even taunting Hop after the bell . You could see from then on it was all Joe.

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Yeah I thought it was a very impressive performance by Joe... by both guys, actually.

What are you talking about Fenster ?? have i not said in the past that Compubox are misleading ?? did i not say that Spinks landed more than Holmes in there rematch by punch stats ?? but that was one of the biggest robberies of all time.

OK.. good for you Ice.
A few months back I didn't know, for certain, whether i got it through to you that punch stats are unreliable and can be very misleading ;)

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
I'll be honest and say that was a terrible fight. One man just backed away all fight while the other kept missing. I said before that both men have seen better days and that was evident last night - neither is in their prime.
But at the end of the day only one of them was trying to win the fight and force the action = Joe Calzaghe.
He did well to comeback and win the fight after the flash knockdown in the 1st.
It was a terrible fight and that was due to a clash of styles. The best man won and he did it in the other mans backyard. (Hopkins company were the promoter's of the fight)
Bernard Hopkins didn't do anything much offensively while Calzaghe was the dominant force in the ring. He controlled center ground - that's why he won.
Joe has won a fight in the States against the No.1 Light Heavyweight in the World, got up off the floor and then been in control of the fight - another tick for Joe in the criteria for greatness.

Umm no way why don't you stop copying a pasting and actually watch the fight again instead of relying on punch stats which are inaccurate. Calzaghe never landed that many power punches, most of his punches were slapping punches when he threw combinations, he did land some solid left hands but no way did he land that many power punches.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
I agree, there is no way Joe landed that many "power punches" I've always wondered what the punchstat counts as a power punch. Joe landed a lot of punches, but let's face it, they aren't solid punches he's landing. A lot are arm punches and some slaps.
I've never been a big fan of punchstat. That tool Jim Lampley can't get enough of it.
-
Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins The Facts!!
Calzaghe won, end of story.
Sure I'm an American, I've never been sold on fighters who don't travel outside their home countries (bar RJJ he had reasons The Olympics and McClellan) but to be a WORLD CHAMPION you must show the WORLD what you can do and Joe fought Hopkins' style for a couple rounds and then did what he was supposed to sped up the fight, upped the punch output, and stalked Hopkins down.
Sure Hopkins fought dirty....this is a new thing for some of you people??? Hopkins is like a smaller meaner Evander Holyfield, he's a great fighter but GOD is it an ugly style to watch! And to beat him you have to be able to win an ugly fight, it's never going to change whether B-Hop is 20-30- or 50 years old.
Give BOTH fighters their credit Joe came to America and took the fight to Hopkins, Bernard is 43 years old and able to compete with younger fighters still in their primes.

Could you point me to these alleged rounds were Hopkins amased his power punches then because from my recolaction I count them in one hand..

Im not saying Hopkins landed loads of power punches, my point was yes Calzaghe did out land Hopkins but he didn't land that many power punches nowhere near it. When Hopkins landed most of his punches were solid power punches IMO. I would pick 10 solid shots in a round rather than 25 pitter patter punches.

Punchstats doesnt "tell all" in cases like Marquez-PAC fights wherein JMM just landed about 20 more punches than PAC the whole fight BUT when it's over 100 punches landed:o that is a BIG discrepancy that even a cleaner harder puncher like Hopkins can overcome.;)

Taylor was out landed by almost 100 punches in the rematch vs Pavlik and many people thought he won the fight, in fact it was anyones fight until the last 2 rounds, the difference is Hopkins also scored a knockdown which made it even closer.

I think that Hopkins won the fight. Honestly no way Joe took 7 rounds by slapping and missing. Sure he pressed the fight but what did he accomplish?

Slapping and pressing is a million times better than getting slapped and running.

For once youve written something i agree with!!!
Up until the last 2 rounds it was even, infact even maybe hopkins winning by 1 point due to the knock down.
But because calzaghe quite clearly took those last 2 rounds, thats where calzaghe wins.
Like i say, it was a very tough fight (for both fighters), an ugly fight, hopkins dominated the first segment then calzaghe turned it around, hopkins was too spent by that time and had no more tricks to turn it back.
You are right, it all came down to the last 2 rounds, the fact calzaghe won those rounds meant that he won.
Im taking nothing away from hopkins, great fighter, but calzaghe got those last two rounds and that was what swayed the fight.

Why are you hating on joe?
Watch round 10 again please, he almost floored hopkins until hopkins clinched.
Hate to say it mate, but grow up mate.
I give respect to hopkins for being a great fighter, calzaghe is just better...give some respect to the man instead of insulting, it just shows your a hater.
